CEE 9 Names of all group members: ________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ 1. Read ASHA’s definitions of cultural responsiveness, cultural competence, and cultural humility. https://www.asha.org/practice-portal/professional-issues/cultural-responsiveness/#collapse_1 In your own words define those three terms. 2. In a complete paragraph, discuss why it is important to recognize and understand the client and family’s cultural and linguistic background. In your discussion, address both cultural and linguistic aspects. 3. Pick one of the following cases where the client has a different cultural and linguistic background than you. Then answer 3 questions about the case and give specific examples that relate to you and the client. You may need to research more about the client’s cultural background to answer these questions thoroughly. (You only need to answer the 3 questions for ONE case.) Case Option 1: MT is a 5-year, 8-month-old bilingual (Spanish-English) female who attends first grade at the Marin School. She was referred to you, a speech-language pathologist, by her classroom teacher as she tends to be “quiet” in class and is not making the expected academic progress. Her mother’s language of preference is Spanish. You will need to complete a parent interview, obtain case history information on MT, and conduct a speech language evaluation (which involves formal testing and a language sample) on Manuela. How can you as their clinician show cultural responsiveness? How can you as their clinician show cultural humility?
Case Option 2: PW is a 21-year-old female presenting with a moderate-strong foreign accent characterized by difficulties in the production of Standard American English phonemes common to native Russian speakers. PW grew up in Russia and recently moved to the United States for college. She plans on moving back to Russia after she completes her degree as she is close with her family. PW was in a car accident resulting in a severe traumatic brain injury. A few months after her injury, PW was referred to a speech-language pathologist for an evaluation of her speech, cognitive, language, and pragmatic abilities. You need to assess her deficits, conduct an interview, and counsel the client. How can you as their clinician show cultural responsiveness? How can you as their clinician show cultural humility?
