Report
Danone at its core seems to heavily focused on all stakeholders, as its philosophy is “One Planet. One Health” along with “Brining Health through food to as many people as possible.” Danone has what they call the “5 Danone Behaviors.” These are: 1. Put Danone First: Working as one team globally to help the business thrive. 2. Lead with People: True leadership only comes from developing others into leaders. 3. Keep it Simple: Don’t overcomplicate things when looking for solutions. 4. Be Accountable: Decisions should be timely and based on facts 5. Walk the Talk: Following through on what we say we will do. In addition to this, Danone takes pride in its B Corp status. B Corp is an organization of various companies that have receive a minimum score on a high level of social and environmental criteria. While more than 70% of Danone’s business is currently B Corp certified, their goal is to be 100% certified by the year 2025. My experience with this organization is that these cultures, values, and philosophies are fully embraced by all levels of the organization. Employees are offered a set amount of paid time off for volunteer work and most corporate events have a community service component with a local food pantry, shelter, or ecological organization. On the global scale they host soccer tournaments for children, education for expectant mothers, and access to clean drinking water and nutrition to countries in need. They offer public access to their Code of Business conduct, which discusses expectations of not only employees, but shareholders, business partners, and even competitors. For example, Danone will not participate in anti-competitive activities and will not make corporate political donations. However, Danone was one of the key businesses in helping regulatory agencies make baby formula available last year during the infant formula crisis, including helping competitors get formula on the shelf. When you see an organization on such a large scale and from a leadership standpoint holding strong to their values, it makes it easier to follow those same values and level of expectations. It creates a buy in not only for employees, but customers are more willing to spend money there than a competitor, so it brings financial gains as well.
Internally, the organization structure has various checks in balances in place to maintain integrity of its business statements and policies. There are strong internal controls in place, and actually have an entire internal controls department to make sure the other departments are in compliance with both external and internal auditing requirements. Mintz & Morris (2020) put an emphasis on the importance of whistleblowing, and while I have never had an experience in which I would need that, all communication to employees is that those that see something and say something will be protected and supported.
