Discussion 6 - Leadership/Communication Identify some common barriers to effective communication and discuss which leadership style(s) best relate to you. What leadership style do you prefer to be managed by, and what specific characteristics are essential to your success? Effective communication is essential in a workplace because it helps establish a positive work environment and healthy work relationships. However, there are some common barriers that exist that can slow or distort effective communication. Some specific barriers include: selective perception, information overload, and language. Selective perception is how the receivers see and hear based on their needs, motivations, experience, background, and other characteristics. Human beings do not see reality, instead we interpret what we see and call it reality. Furthermore, another barrier is information overload. Information overload exists when the information we work with exceeds our processing capacity. As a result, when information overload occurs, individuals may tend to select, ignore, pass over, or forget information. In addition, another barrier is language. Even when humans are communicating in the same language, some words may mean different things for different people. As a leader, is it crucial that one understands appropriate terms and vocabulary to communicate with employees, in a way that is professional and respectful (Robbins, pg. 185). Furthermore, I believe that the leadership style that best relates to myself is transactional leadership. Transactional leaders motivate their followers in the direction of established goals by clarifying role and task requirements, allocating rewards and punishments, and intervening when the situation calls for it (Robbins, pg. 201). I believe that I often help those I lead by reminding them of our overall goals and intervening only when necessary. However, the leadership style that I prefer to be managed by is transformational leadership. This type of leadership allows followers to transcend their self-interests for the good of the organization. I believe that for my own individual success, it is important that my leader allows intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and idealized influence (Robbins, pg. 202) Robbins, S. P. (2013). Essentials of organizational behavior (15th ed.). Hello Amanda, I had a great time reading what you had to say in regards to communication and leadership. I agree that barriers such as filtering, information overload, and communicating in times of crisis, can all pose such great threats to effective communication. Out of all the barriers that you have listed, which one do you think impacts communication the most and why? Additionally, I thought your explanation for the barriers were very interesting and detailed. Furthermore, I believe that supportive and authentic leadership styles are great and I am happy to hear that they resonate with you the most. Lastly, I am happy that you have identified that you like working with
leaders who practice supportive and transactional styles. Overall, great job on providing quality information and explaining your thoughts.
