IT-252 IT Teams and Group Dynamics
6-2 Journal; Virtual Team Reflection
4/14/2024
Cody Willert
The ability for our class group to maintain a virtual and remote team was tested this week through our first group assignment. I believe that there were a few aspects of completing a basic group assignment that brought forth realizations in the successful implementation of different schedules and working styles. The dynamics of a group assignment created unforeseen boundaries in the initialization of the team communication. We started with problems in compatibility in Microsoft Teams. We chose Teams as our tool for communication without realizing the compatibility to our student accounts and newer versions of the application would be obstacles in early communication. We also came to the realization that since our work was not
scheduled, like a working shift, that we were going to have obstacles in schedule that kept our teammates unaware of what to submit to the group to maintain the best result and equalized effort.
I believe that the team’s efficiency was hindered by our lack of organization to begin with. I think that the assignment of a group leader and specified roles would help eliminate the issues with what to do as a single team member. Multiple of our teammates were unable to make the schedule work with their lives, and thus had no real idea on how to contribute with the time that they had available. We were able to maintain the best influence from team members on the weekend, but had absent members, we now know to limit most of the group work to the weekend. We also know that having specific roles defined early in the week would positively influence the end product and keep role-specific work from being handed down to the next available member.

This chapter explores team processes—the communication, activities, and interactions that occur within teams as they pursue their goals and accomplish their tasks. Some processes are directly related to core team tasks. Other processes integrate or support accomplishment of core tasks. Finally, other processes result in difficult to observe team states, including cohesion, potency, mental models, and transactive memory. To improve team process, organizations may include training in areas such as team building and team competencies.
