Leader and Manager
The role of a leader and the role of a manager may seem very similar. However, there are subtle differeces. Leaders can be found in every industry and walk of life, regardless of position. Leaders are those who “have a vision and draw on passion to engage others “ (Valiga, 2019). Leaders are those who want to effect change. You will easily recognize the leader as other people look up to them and seek their advice. They are very influential people within a group. They are the “go to person” as they individuals that direct the success and direction of the organization (Valiga, 2019). They are not afraid to take risks because they have the ability to take failure and learn from it. Once an idea fails, they will go back to the drawing board, regroup,
and devise another plan for success. Leaders are excellent communicators; they know how to communicate with their audience for better outcomes. Leaders are those who get the group excited about a new vision and create new ideas (Valiga, 2019).
Managers work with others to realize the goals of an organization, with great skill, but not always with passion. Managers are generally fewer in number and hold higher positions. They set the expectations for the organization. Managers hold a title and are responsible to oversee the day-to-day operations and address issues that may arise (Valiga, 2019). Managers must complete employee evaluations, hire and terminate employment, review and control budgets, and implement and ensure compliance with policies and procedures. They are included in the financial planning of the corporation. Skills I Possess
Leadership Skills
The three skills that I possess as a leader are creativity, encouragement through team building, and mentorship. While being employed with a telehealth company, I identified a need
3
for a mental health referral department, understanding the benefit it would provide the population
of patients that we serve as well as my company. I was influential in the development of the policies and procedures and assisted with the implementation of that department into the company. I assisted the marketing department on how we should market our product and how to make it stand out from our competitors to show our clients the benefit for their employees and the potential to reduce acute and long-term hospitalizations. Throughout my nursing career, I have built relationships and impacted change by having a positive attitude and encouraging the other teammates. At another agency, the management had
presented new policies and procedures created by management without the benefit of input from the front-line workers. Once the new information was presented to our team, there was significant “pushback”. As an effective leader, I found ways to encourage others to have a more optimistic outlook on the new changes ahead. I pointed out the positive attributes and the potential advantages of the policies. As the changes were implemented, others accepted the changes readily and even looked forward to the positive outcomes. The last skill that I possess is mentorship. My management team recognized that I was completing my cases promptly. They inquired as to how I worked my cases. I explained to them the system that I created. They were greatly pleased and asked if I would like to mentor a group of nurses who are struggling with time management. I agreed. I now mentor nurses for six weeks. We meet frequently during those six weeks to monitor progress and identify any obstacles they are facing so we can resolve them and ensure they are successful.
Management Skills
The three skills that I possess as a manager are identifying skills for hiring, time management and emotional intelligence. While working with the telehealth company mentioned
4
previously to build a mental health department, I was asked to interview and hire the nurses intended to staff that department. Through skillfully worded and asked questions, I was able to identify the traits and experience the organization had determined were most important and recommend those nurses for immediate hire or suggest training for the specific role. Another management skill that I possess is time management. All managers must possess
this attribute to meet their weekly, monthly, biannually, and annual goals. This will help them measure the areas they are successful and what areas need improvement. I feel as a leader that I possess this skill. I do work in case management with one of the companies that I am employed by. Each day I am given a specific number of cases that I have to complete by the end of the work day. We must work on these cases thoroughly and efficiently. Since beginning to work as a
case manager, I look at my caseloads and create a system on what needs to be completed and when it is due. Depending on what stage the case is in, I use a color code to indicate what is needed to finish for that case to be completed. The last skill that I possess is emotional intelligence. According to Tobierski (2020), emotional intelligence includes a keen sense of self-awareness, empathy and the ability to motivate and influence others through our own personal actions. As a mother and nurse, I have learned the art of empathy, being able to relate and understand the emotions of those around me without actually taking on those emotions for myself. I am able to acknowledge the specific emotion and provide feedback that will encourage or demonstrate caring. This demonstration provides the safe space needed for others to release any negativity and continue on their healing and growing paths.
