1029LHS Assessment #3 Portfolio Feedback Reflection Action Plan for Essay Planning Document Assessment #2 What are the main areas for revision identified in your feedback? What do you have to do to respond to this feedback? Main areas for revision based on my feedback is that I went off topic for some of my planning and went away from the task at hand, I needed to provide more structured writing with a better flow that included more topic sentences. I needed more relevant sources and need to improving referencing format. Focus more on answering the question and focusing only on identifying differences and how each role is different. Revise course content so that I can write more structurally. I also need to revise the referencing guide to help with my references. What I did well (note these down so you can do them again) I unpacked the essay question quite well I just need to focus more on topic. My outline is clear I just need to make it flow. Questions you have about any feedback you did not understand: In your working thesis you say your sub arguments (differences) you will prove are the difference role approaches AND role principles. Your body paragraphs do not reflect this. I didn’t quite understand this wording The evidence should be supporting what you claim as the definition of leadership. Your evidence is quite old (currency). I thought Martin Luther King Jr. being a very prominent historical figure and leader would be relevant to use as a source as he is still prevalent and celebrated today. Tutor advice: The feedback is a lot of help to guide me on the right path but some of the feedback I received was unclear to me being the way it was worded/said some of it didn’t make sense to me.
1029LHS Assessment #3 Portfolio Editing Decisions How have you applied the feedback from your Essay Planning Document? How has your action plan influenced the editing decisions that you made? Complete the following and explain the work that you did to build on the feedback from Assessment #2. Step 1. Self-evaluation and reflection What challenges did you face in writing your essay? Did you have any difficulties putting your action plan into practice? Add your self-reflection and evaluation comments about your editing process ( these comments are your reflection on how you used your feedback reflection from Week 8, not a copy of the comments you put in that reflection ) to the relevant marking criteria. Put a comment about each criterion to show that you have considered this, even if you did not receive specific feedback for improvement. Research: Conceptualisation and understanding of topic I was given feedback that I was going off topic so I changed my approach to the assignment to solely focus of the differences between leadership and management. Development of topic and organisation of ideas I addressed the roles and their definitions in different paragraphs repeating myself so I have now separated and better organised the flow of my topics in each paragraph Use of sources I have now included more in-text referencing throughout my work and have used many sources to construct my ideas and work. Presentation of ideas I have done a spell and grammar check to the best of my ability to ensure I am presenting my ideas professionally and correctly. Step 2. Editing decisions Explain the editing decisions that you took (where, how, why) using annotated extracts from your essay. You should present 3 extracts that exemplify different areas that you improved on based on feedback on Assessment #2. Copy and paste the extract from your essay below. Highlight the part of the extract where you applied the feedback. Write a short explanation of your editing decisions – where, how, and why. Leadership is a vital aspect of success in any field. It is widely agreed that an effective leader has strong characteristics of confidence, communication, management skills, creative and innovative thinking, problem solving skills, open minded, perseverance and a risk taker. (Manning, 2022). I have now included a better topic sentence at the start of this paragraph so the reader is better informed before they continue to read the paragraph this adheres better to the TEEL paragraph structure.
1029LHS Assessment #3 Portfolio Each leadership position in the company still has the characteristics of leaders discussed above and no matter what level of the company the leader and management roles still differentiate. The leaders are setting the goals and leading the company while the management teams ensure everyone is working towards the goals and planning how the teams can achieve their goals. Further highlighting how intricate these roles can be but still hold the same characteristics and major differences. I have readjusted my argument approach by better focusing on the differences of each role and in my planning a focused to much on how the roles can work together. But the task is asking to differentiate and discuss the differences of both roles. By adjusting my approach I am now addressing the task properly. Manning, T. (2022). Leadership: A Critical Review and Guide. Nienaber, H. (2010). Conceptualisation of management and leadership.  Management decision 48 (5), 661- 675. Rattini, K. (2019, June 18).  King Sargon of Akkad—facts and information . Culture. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/culture/article/king-sargon-akkad I was given feedback that my sources needed to be more prevalent so I have now included more prevalent sources from more recent years making my evidence stronger as the points made with updated sources create stronger arguments. But I believe it is still beneficial to use dated information as a lot of dated information actually have some of the best ideas, arguments and points. For example quoting Martin Luther King JR I believe is still prevalent today as he is a historical figure still celebrated today that provides extremely useful quotes and teachings.
1029LHS Assessment #3 Portfolio Identify and discuss the differences between leadership and management In today’s world, leadership and management play crucial roles within groups and businesses. Leaders work towards influencing and motivating people towards a common goal by setting an example. While management can be one or a group of people that control and enforce a group towards a goal efficiently. While leadership and management both involve guiding individuals towards a common goal, the approaches and principles of both roles differentiate. ( Leadership Vs Management: Understanding the Key Difference | Simplilearn , 2023). Leaders can be used as a figurehead for a group to look up to and aspire to be like. As leaders need to inspire others and set an example for all. Leaders can have a management group to help enforce goals and push groups towards common goals. Management groups can do all the background work of enforcing rules and maintaining efficiency so the leader can more focus on guiding and inspiring the main group. Which is what makes each role so different to one another as they each have their own purpose but by working together it can create successful outcomes for all involved. Leadership is a vital aspect of success in any field. It is widely agreed that an effective leader has strong characteristics of confidence, communication, management skills, creative and innovative thinking, problem solving skills, open minded, perseverance and a risk taker. (Manning, 2022). Leaders must have the ability to influence and motivate a group towards a common goal. As stated by Luther King JR 1967 “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus” A real leader should never seek control or power over a group, leaders should come naturally as a role model for those working towards a common goal. Leaders operate in the best interest for a group, not in the best interest of themselves. Leadership characteristics alone show how these roles differentiate. We as humans are naturally drawn to a leader, we have had recorded history of leaders dating back to 3100 BCE that’s around 5,000 years ago being King Sargon of Akkad (Rattini, 2021). Since this period there have been countless other leaders that have risen and fell. We can even analyse the animal kingdom that have natural pack leaders. Wolves, monkeys, gorillas, lions, it is well known that countless animals have packs and alphas that lead and protect the pack. These natural occurrences and recorded history prove how important the role of leadership is and how it clearly differentiates from a management role. Management is how groups organise and direct workflow towards a common goal. Management deals with operations of a group. In a business environment usually, you will find an allocated management group. Management itself already heavily differentiates from leadership as this role is usually a group of people or a singular role for one person. Management still needs to have the qualities of leaders but management works for the leader nine times out of ten. Unless, the company is run based off of shareholders then there is an allocated leadership team which is essentially group leadership and management combined into a shared role
