2 1. The Artifact Glossier is a company I have shopped with for a long time. I chose to analyze their most popular product, a liquid blush called “cloud paint”, because it gained popularity very quickly and has remained relevant despite recent fad culture. I love how simple and aesthetic their branding is and wanted to take a deeper dive into the elements behind it. 2. Elements and Parts The design of the Glossier Cloud Paint tube is centered around a soft, moldable plastic. Each shade of the product is printed with a block of color at the base of the tube that matches the shade inside. The rest of the tube is a bright white, giving it a “clean” aesthetic. These colorful blocks list the shade inside in modern, all-caps letters that are slightly spaced apart for style purposes. The body of the tube also features the product name in the same modern font, with an italicized description of the product in two lines beneath it. The tube has a glossy matte finish and is topped with a screw-on lid to prevent any leaks during storage. 3. Artifact Research Glossier is a clean beauty brand that has gained significant popularity in recent years. Initially offering skincare and makeup products, they have recently expanded into branded apparel, fragrance, and body care. Glossier has always had a “clean” aesthetic and targets young adults and teens, implementing an emergent approach to their branding to remain aligned with pop culture and remain relevant (Duffy and Page, 2021). Their cute branding and commitment to sustainability makes them a popular and socially conscious choice. Glossier’s Cloud Paint is a cruelty-free, liquid blush that is easily buildable over makeup (“Cream Blush: Cloud Paint | Glossier”, 2024). Launched in 2017 during a shift from matte to cream products, Glossier’s Cloud Paint quickly gained
3 popularity because of its high-quality formula and beautiful pigmentation. (“Glossier Just Dropped a Bronzer Version of Its Beloved Cloud Paint”, 2024). The product remains extremely popular due to the enduring trend of glossy makeup and vibrant, pigmented cheeks. 4. Rhetorical Analysis Ethos: Glossier has gained brand credibility through years of consistently safe and clean products and ethical practices in business. Glossier has earned the Cruelty Free International accreditation and is widely known for pushing towards more sustainable practices (“Glossier - Skincare: Ethical Sustainable Comparison”, 2024). Logos: Glossier has a Partner Code of Conduct that outlines their commitment to not participating in unethical labor, unsafe products, and irresponsible sourcing. They also only partner with vendors who source responsibly and do not engage in animal testing (“Supply Chain Transparency”, 2024). Pathos: Glossier appeals to emotion in their consumers by keeping their packaging clean and aesthetic. When you look at their branding, you feel calm and safe using their products. Because their marketing is clean, people associate their brand with clean ingredients as well. 5. Design Principles: Typography Color Consistency Readability Aesthetic-Usability Effect All five of the design elements listed above heavily impact the Cloud Paint’s design principles. Glossier’s Cloud Paint packaging utilizes modern, all-caps typography that is slightly spaced apart which also increases readability. The typography also reflects the modern and minimalist aesthetic that is appealing to their young target audience. The pops of color used on the packaging adds a vibrant, visually appealing element and makes it easy to identify shades quickly. Glossier maintains consistency throughout all its branding and uses a uniform typography, color palette, and style to create brand recognition. Lastly, the Cloud Paint’s design not only looks good but is super user-friendly. The soft, moldable tube offers easy access to the product inside and the screw-on lid ensures that the product remains secure. Glossier’s Cloud Paint packaging successfully combines function and aesthetic for an overall practical product.

This commitment to integrity is mirrored in their clean, aesthetic packaging that emotionally appeals to consumers’ associating the brand with calmness and safety. The practical design elements, like the soft, moldable rube and secure screw-on lid, ensure the product is both functional and aesthetic. 7. Impact of the Artifact Glossier isn’t just another skincare brand. They are committed to providing unique and safe products for users who want to express themselves through their makeup. The Cloud Paint offers users a wide range of vibrant shades to ensure there’s something for everyone. Its sleek design embodies Glossier’s commitment to aesthetics white still remaining user-friendly and sustainable. The concept of Cloud Paint encourages users to boldly express themselves through their makeup and encourages a more inclusive and authentic approach to the beauty industry.
