CREATIVE LEADERSHIP 2020
FINAL ESSAY
In this article created by Teresa Amabile and Mukti Khaire explained how they held a two-day colloquium at Harvard Business School to make connections between theory and practice on creativity. They invited leaders from companies who depend on creativity for success such as Novartis, IDEO, and Google. When the event ended most people agreed that there is a role for the creative process in management positions and that it is different that traditional work establishments. With nearly 100 people attending the event the overall reflective viewpoint was decided that one doesn’t manage creativity, but one manages for creativity. These are the results they discovered.
One priority of leadership is to interact with the right people at the correct place and time.
Knowing how to engage with people personally can create strong personal connections between leaders and followers. Google stated that is highly recommended to accept ideas from all ranks of the business and to cross-train so that the success of the business isn’t dependent on its genius and once this person leaves then the business may fail according Israel Drori a professor in Israel. The article also stated that you should keep your organization open to diverse perspectives. Jeffrey Sanchez a professor at the University of Michigan state studied and found research that focuses on social identities of different people such as Asian Americans and the information associated with them. The experiment asked them to form an Asian American fusion
dish which gained personal interest and implication for management. If these managers force these individuals to hide part of their identity, then their creativity will be limited.
Managers can also enhance diversity by looking outside the organization for sources of creativity. As a leader you must provide comfortability in the workplace so that people creative process isn’t block by the walls of the firm.
One of the points that stood out mostly for me is the section explained by Mark Fishman
titled “Map the phases of creative work”. Mark said that the leader’s job is to map out the stages of innovation and to recognize the different processes, skill sets, and technology support for each one. Fishman (Amabile & Khaire 2014) stated “
To predict an idea is to have an idea.
” This create process stood out to me because we did a demonstration during week one of our class session and it physically show how that was possible. It’s impossible to know in advance what will be the next invention and it takes improvement of an old idea to create one. Divergent thinking can play a major role in this statement and is one of the main ways I plan to develop my creativity thinking in the future. Like being optimistic you will be open to all ideas and opportunities.
Another create process that stood out to me from the article is to allow people to pursue their passion. People are more revolutionary thinkers and are best suited for new projects. Scott Cook explained that just because you have a team that creates the next big idea and its crazy to assume that your going to get a newer idea from the same team without adding
new people and ideas to the team. You must find ways to provide your team with ways to use their individual interest and skills. Giving your team a project with independence l hold less risk and will drive creative workers to work on their own time just like how google does their team.
When Google first provided this type of work service to their employees, they ended up a new program like google scholar. To be appreciative audience was another strong point in this article. Russ Wilcox of E Ink (Amabile & Khaire 2014) stated “The greatest inventions in our company are always done to impress someone else
”. Leaders can contribute to inspire creative work in process. Mark Addicks the chief marketing officer believe that workers are highly influenced by management engagement towards the project and even stated that the way a leader asks a question can influence their team positively. This is another strong point that I plan on using once I began working at the Marriott voyage program because I know that from my previous jobs when a manager showed interest towards a specific project in the kitchen it pushed me to work even harder for the best results.
CBS News also attended the Harvard Business School colloquium and posted an article on their website where they took their key points from the event and titled it Creativity and the
role of a leader. One main point that I found critical from this article was that they said you should have a diverse team in your organization by getting people of different disciplines, backgrounds, and areas of expertise to share ideas. There are many celebrities who refuse to partner with companies to create new products because their team isn’t diverse enough. Having a team that consist of very similar team members way work together harmoniously but will take extra time to create new and innovative ideas. They also listed many ways to enhance organizational creativity by protecting creatives from bureaucracy, knowing when to pose control and when not to, and to create a filtering mechanism which means knowing when to push an idea to the side rather than completely trashing the idea. Google
(CBS News 2009) concluded their article by stating”
Too many companies think creativity means throwing money

Sustaining or institutionalizing change after implementation can be challenging for organizations and, in some cases, more complex than implementing the change itself (Palmer et al., 2022). The primary challenge centers around the need for those impacted by the change to adopt new behaviors and embrace a growth mindset. Therefore, leaders must communicate and reinforce the importance of these critical areas throughout the change process.
How comfortable are you with accepting unanticipated organizational changes?
How might leaders support employees in adopting new behaviors aligned with organizational change efforts?
Share an example where embracing a growth mindset helped you adapt to an organizational change.

Overview
We enter the world as curious beings. However, as we grow up, we are told to color inside the lines and that real animals can’t talk—direction that can squelch creativity. Many successful entrepreneurs work to unlearn some of those messages in order to tap into creative thinking. What do you do when you are given a task that requires you to be creative? Do you get out your art supplies and start drawing? Do you pull out your phone or get on your computer and head straight for a search engine? Steve Jobs, the Apple founder and well-known innovator, had a preference when it came to creative contemplation, and it had nothing to do with art supplies or smartphones. Jobs did some of his best creative thinking when he went on a walk, or a walking chat.
Why did Jobs prefer walking as a way to develop new ideas? A Stanford University study found that walking improves creative thinking. When you launch an entrepreneurial journey and set out to innovate and create, or when you hit a…
