Biography Assignment: Lillian Gilbreth

https://unladylike2020.com/profile/lillian-gilbreth/
For my report, I chose to write about Lillian Evelyn Moller Gilbreth. Lillian was a brilliant woman who’s accomplishments shaped organizational theory for years to come. She contributed much to psychology and had a huge impact on the world of science. Not only was she a pioneer in her field, she was also one of the first female engineers and the first woman to earn her PhD. She was also the first woman to be elected to the National Academy of Engineering. (1) She is also fairly well known for her perspectives as a wife and mother (5). All of this, and much more, is why I have chosen to write about this incredible woman. Lillian was born in 1978 in Oakland, California, to her parents Annie and William. It is remarked
that her family is from a German descent. According to PBS, it is said the expectations from her family was for Lillian to become a homemaker and mother. However, she was not too keen on this idea (1). She was always a bright girl, and went on to attend U.C. Berkeley, which is very close to her hometown. Attending college was less common for women at this time, so this shows how driven Lillian truly was. At first, she majored in English Literature. Once receiving her credentials in this field, she went on to study Psychology, also at Berkeley. She also went on to receive her masters in psychology here, per the suggestion of her husband, Frank. After marrying her husband, she went on to work under him as his engineering apprentice. It was during her time working with her husband that the wheels began to turn in her head regarding clear improvements that could be made (5).
After working by her husband's side for quite some time, Lillian began to put real thought into changes she could be making. With her husband Frank, she invented the
“time-and-motion” study. This study worked at analyzing efficiency and reducing human error to enhance safety and
satisfaction. The implementation of this study simultaneously reduced fatigue and ultimately led to higher profits and improvement in the productivity of workers (1). Her approach was considered very “humanistic” and highly regarded (4). A lot of what makes up our modern day “scientific management” stems from her ideologies and theories. She is known as the mother of modern management. (
4) While money may have been the sole motivator for many people in Lillian’s role, from the reading I have done, it seems she was only concerned with keeping the peace. She asked questions like, “how can everyone be the most satisfied and efficient employee?” What changes can we implement to get people there?” “What would make a workspace environment better for everyone.” These are questions that no one else was really asking at the time and it was revolutionary. In 1914, she went on to write “
The Psychology of Management,” which is still revered today as the foundational text for psychology (2).
She went on to teach following the death of her beloved husband and became the first (very on brand for her) female engineering teacher at Purdue University (1). She won the Hoover medal. Eventually passed away in our very own Phoenix, Arizona in 1972. She is survived by her many children. She was also immortalized in the family favorite film, “Cheaper by the Dozen.” She inspired that specific character as a parent to 12 children and was written by two of her children (2).The impact of her work was enormous, as one can tell by the way we all still speak of it today. She is well known for being a “pioneer” of industrial/organizational psychology. She lived her life for science, innovation, and exploration. Amin, A. (2023, March 7). Sales volume and market share of the product had increased significantly over the past two quarters compared with the previous year. New Management Challenges for the New Age
Today’s news is littered with scandals, new allegations of sexual assault, and tragedy. Since 2017 and the #metoo Movement, stemming from the Harvey Weinstein scandal, more and more public figures have been put into the spotlight to defend themselves against allegations from women around the globe.
Not only publically, but privately in companies around the world, there have been firings, and investigations into misconduct from co-workers, managers, and CEOs. It is a relevant topic that is getting long overdue publicity and encouraging more men and women to come forward to discuss openly rather than hide the events and injustices of the past. Other events showcase the tumultuous and on-edge society we are living in, such as the Charlottesville, VA attack, that left 1 dead and 19 injured when a person drove a car through a crowd of protestors during a white nationalist gathering.
With events on a daily business, it is important for…

Here are my strengths and areas for improvement:
As a leader, I have found that my ability to inspire and motivate comes into play. This was evident during my summer internship at a bank in Vietnam two years ago. I was assigned to a project working with other interns to implement an informal customer relationship management system. Although the activity was hypothetical and part of the intern training program, I was able to inspire the team by emphasizing how the system would simplify their workload and improve customer satisfaction. SHORT ANSWER
3 Leadership Styles from Chapter 7
Autocratic leadership means making managerial decisions without consulting others. This style is effective in emergencies and when absolute followership is needed—for example, when fighting fires, performing surgery, and executing military operations. Autocratic leadership is also effective with new, relatively unskilled workers who need clear direction and guidance.
Participative or democratic leadership involves managers and employees working together to make decisions. Employee participation in decisions may not always increase effectiveness, but it usually does increase job satisfaction. Employees resolve management issues by having an opportunity to contribute to management’s decisions.
In free-rein leadership, managers set objectives and employees are free to do whatever is appropriate to accomplish those objectives. This style of leadership provides the least amount of direct supervision. Free-rein leadership is often the most…
