After your discussion with your site supervisor at the Riverbend City Counseling Center, you reflect on the career counseling theory that is most meaningful to you. Describe the career counseling theory that resonates with
you. Highlight the aspects of the theory that align with your current understanding of career development. Provide a critique of the theory and how you will address its weaknesses.
I reflected most with Holland’s Vocational theory comprised by John L. Holland (Tang, 2018). This theory emphasizes the relationship between individual personality types and career choices. Holland proposed that individuals are most satisfied and successful in their careers when their personality type matches the characteristics of the work environment. Holland’s career theory has been widely used in career counseling and vocational guidance (Tang, 2018). Counselors use assessments and interventions based on the RIASEC model to help individuals make informed career choices. The key aspects of Holland’s career theory include (1) realistic: persons who are hands-on and practical; (2) investigative: persons who enjoy solving complex issues and are analytical; (3) artistic: persons with creative minds and express themselves through the arts; (4) social: person who thrive working in group settings and sociable; (5) enterprising: persons who enjoy and take on leadership roles; and (6) conventional: persons that are more detail-oriented and better off in structured environments. A critique of the Holland’s theory includes the lack of attention to skills and abilities. The model primarily focuses on personality types and interests, however, may not efficiently address an individual’s skills, abilities, or aptitudes. Successful career choices often require a combination of both personality fit and competence in relevant skills. This could be addressed by shifting the focus from personality types to a more comprehensive consideration of skills and abilities. I would emphasize the importance of transferable skills that can be applied across various career fields. References: Tang, M. (2018). Career development and counseling: Theory and practice in
a multicultural world. SAGE Publications, Incorporated.

Some research studies (Ilies & Judge, 2003; Saari & Judge, 2004) report that genetics play a very important part in whether an employee has a high level of job satisfaction. Their work suggests that the attitudes, personality, and values that a person brings to the workplace are better predictors of whether the employee will be satisfied than any of the external factors a company or manager might provide the employee. In fact, their studies indicate that a person with high satisfaction will generally report being highly satisfied, no matter the situation within the company. Similarly, a person who reports low satisfaction will consistently report low satisfaction, no matter what the company may do to increase the employee's satisfaction.
If these studies are correct, then there would seem to be some rationality in only hiring applicants with positive personalities.

(Case Analysis (Sorry, You're Too Smart
Have you ever been turned down for a job because you
?"were "overqualified
Although this may sound like a compliment, it can be
disappointing when you are job hunting. Consider
applicants who are turned down for jobs because they are
"too smart." This could be determined by pre-
employment testing or the interviewer may assume
applicants' cognitive ability based on education level,
GPA, or certifications. You don't often hear someone say
that an applicant is "too emotionally intelligent" or "too
physically coordinated." So why does it matter if you are
?overqualified in cognitive ability
Employers may argue that cognitively overqualified
employees will not perform well in their jobs. The lack of
challenge they feel in the job tasks could make them
bored and unmotivated and then lead to low performance.
In fact, research shows that cognitively overqualified
employees perform just as well as other employees, but
