MAN4102 Discussion 6 Affinity bias is when a person tends to hire individuals that are like themselves. There are times when an interviewer will be more likely to hire an individual with backgrounds and appearances like their own. It is important to avoid affinity bias in the workplace and your life in general. The most crucial step in avoiding affinity bias is to be cognizant of your own biases. By being self-aware of your own thoughts and feelings, you can ensure that you are not allowing your judgement to be clouded. While interviewing potential candidates you should ask them questions that will allow them to elaborate and open up regarding what they are enthusiastic about. It is important that you limit these questions to gage how well they will do the job and not pry into their personal life. I enjoyed learning about the techniques used to make the hiring process more inclusive such as allowing the candidates to structure the interview process to accommodate them. I am an introvert and I personally have a challenging time while interviewing. If I were provided with the opportunity to select how I am interviewed I believe that I would be more successful during the interview process. It can be exhausting answering the same questions in back-to-back interviews within the same organization. If able to choose, I would prefer a panel interview so I can complete the process in one sitting without the need to repeat myself answering the same questions. I also liked the idea of taking assessments at your home which will allow you to be in an area you are comfortable with. If you can complete them at your own pace, you will likely do better on the assessment providing the organization with a clearer image of what you are capable of. Hello Emilee, I personally love the ideas of diverse hiring panels to avoid affinity bias. I was up for a huge promotion at my last employer, and I had to develop and present a PowerPoint to the panel followed by an interview. I was extremely nervous to present and interview in front of so many people, but I appreciate that it provided the opportunity to complete the interview in one sitting. The panel interview also limited being asked the same question repeatedly. If I were given the opportunity to select how I was interviewed in the future, I would select this method again as opposed to having multiple interviews.
