1. There is a discussion early in this chapter about the need to prepare for growth. What actions did Scott Norton and Mark Ramadan take that demonstrate their commitment to trying to fully understand growth and its ramifications for their firm? They thought a lot about branding. They instinctively knew that natural ingredients and taste would not get the attention they needed. They needed their ketchup to stand out. They created a unique name and unique bottles and labels. They tried to apply the technology adoption life cycle to their business. 2. We noted in this chapter that core competencies are essentially what a firm does particularly well. What are the core competencies of the firm Sir Kensington’s? How sustainable are these core competencies? They are very dedicated and use technology to advertise. They apply “Crossing the Chasm” to their business model. They targeted independent grocery stores first. This is because they typically appeal to innovators more. 3. Look at Figure 13.2 , which shows the organizational life cycle. In which of these stages is Sir Kensington’s located? To what issues do Sir Kensington’s founders need to be particularly sensitive in this stage? Sir Kensington’s is located in the Late Majority. However, they are still successful because of their premium packaging and label designs. They are in the mainstream market. They need to be careful because Ketchup is on the downfall of innovation and may not be needed near as much as it once was. They need to ensure people are going to want to buy their products.
