Scenario: You are a part of the visitor use management team at the Great North Woods National Park. You and your colleagues have been tasked with refining the rules and regulations for the heavily used South Fork Management Unit (one of five MUs in the park). The South Fork MU is home to the very popular South Fork Trail, and sees heavy usage from visitors engaged in hiking, trail running, and backpacking. Currently, management is particularly interested in (1) the parking area associated with the South Fork Trailhead, (2) the use levels on the South Fork Trail, and (3) the ecological condition of the trail itself. Specifically, your group has been asked to define standards of quality and appropriate management activities for these three areas, using a normative approach. Data from a visitor survey will form the basis of your work. Part 1: As a class Identify a standard of quality for wait times to find a parking spot at the South Fork Trailhead 1. Calculate mean scores for responses to survey question 1 2. Use mean scores to create a norm curve, and identify the following elements: a. Optimum condition b. Minimum acceptable condition c. Range of acceptable conditions d. Range of unacceptable conditions 3. Using the norm curve, define the standard of quality 4. Describe appropriate rules/regulations to maintain acceptable conditions 5. Describe corrective management activities to be applied if the standard is exceeded Part 2: In small groups Conduct a similar process for encounters on the South Fork Trail (question 2), and trail conditions of the South Fork Trail (question 3). Record your responses to each question. Be specific!! Report your work to the larger group for feedback.
