According to Linda Hopping & Ruthie Stevenson being able to identify when is the best time to take professional development is a key component for teachers to use their time wisely and focus on instructional and academic needs for their students. Another thing to take into consideration is the how of professional development. Don't stay focused on what is the most common form of planning, but to allow yourself to be open-minded and challenge yourself so that students are receiving the most benefical instruction they will continue to remember moving forward to their later years. Examples of the how are Targeted PD, Whole Group Delivery, Small Group Deliver and Peer Learning. Being able to identify these how's and not stick to the common planning process will allow educators to benefit from the various methods that can be used inside and outside of the classroom. Each of these will enhance each student to identify their own struggles and ask for assistance in areas they they may have known they needed to receive assistance in. In addition, you will face a number of challenges that can prevent from implementing the professional developments that have been set during your weekly, montly, or even summer plannings. The most common challenge is funding. It is important to incorporate a professional development where the discusssion of various funding methods are available and begin to apply for them to receive the most monies possible through various grants. It is also important to remain dedicted in the work that you are putting in so that it can be most effective for your students. Once you have these factors in play, you will have a better understanding of the various types and how to create continued professional development that will allow for learning opportunites that are relevant, engaging and appropriate for the curriclum being taught and the students receiving the information.
