Analytic Hierarchy Process or which is also known as AHP “is way to handle quantifiable and/or intangible criteria in the decision making process” (Thibadeau, B., 2007). I used an AHP process when purchasing my house. I did this in the way that I looked at characteristics of my house and what I am expecting for my life in the upcoming years. In the current situation, I was working full time remote, working two jobs, expecting to purchase a furry friend, and going back to get my master’s degree. So, with those different aspects, we can understand criteria and risk. The criteria I am looking at a house would be as follows: Location o Closeness to both jobs o Taxes o Neighbor proximity Characteristics o Garage/off-road parking o Fenced in backyard. o Number of rooms/utilities When calculating the risk associated with my house and my needs for the house, I take into consideration of the following from highest (9) to lowest (3) rank: Requirement versus luxury Cost Availability Room for improvements (as-is versus renovation or building) After conducting the AHP, I have realized that the location criterion was not as important as I have scored for the characteristics of the physical house. After further review with my thoughts, I have realized that I prefer the ability to have parking and number of rooms/utilities to be my top ranks. I notice that because I want to be able to host family events and parties along with being able to have organization when I need to do my work (school or job) versus hosting or living. To not have the need to clean off my car in the 8/9 months in the year that it snows in my area. With the AHP, we can prioritize or rank the things we require without an emphasis on bias. This helps individuals or teams to know what makes the most sense based on the rankings of risk and likelihood based on all the criteria set. When understanding how the leaders, program managers, or project managers look to execute these types of analysis in projects, they are able to associate the needs of the company and the project team to then calculate the risk and liklihood of anything that might happen given different scope of the project. So this is something that the AHP will bring out is understanding what makes the most sense based on the needs of either the
stakeholders or the project teams. Then hopfully, with the outcome that the project sponsor chooses, it will be the best fit given that everything was ranked correctly and the criteria aligns to the mission of the organization or department. References: Thibadeau, B. (2007). Prioritizing project risks using AHP. Paper presented at PMI® Global Congress 2007 Hello Melissa, This is very interesting because I did a very similar AHP when purchasing a house. Obviously the difference between a personal apprasial and a business but I think the same concepts apply here. Essentially we are putting data to the wants and needs of wither an individual or a business. I believe as a business, there are additional criteria used like labor and competition which givea a little more diversiveness and complexity to your analyssis. But overall, I agree all of these different factors will definitely help in decision making for your business to be able to chose the correct spot for your buiness in a new area. Thanks! RJ Hello Samantha, I have had a similar experience with a project that had two different vendors for a single solution for my project. This project that I am referencing had two different teams with two fuctionalities that we needed to consider and integrate with one another. We did a similar review with the same criteria that you have but also included the integration level that the system was able to have given our current infrastructure. After the review, we went with the second vendor who better aligned with both of our different team's needs. Not only that but with the support we still need because of the pandemic and the restrictions that caused during our project. regardless, using this approach really asssits in the organization having the ability to match what they need to each of the vendors regardless of what each vendor has individually. Thanks!
