HR 522 – Human Resources Planning
Environmental Scan
K. Leroux Environmental Scan and Analysis Assignment
Overview
This assignment is based on a hypothetical situation. We will assume:
Confederation College has determined there is a market for its educational programs in (a city to be selected by students)
. Thus, you do not need to be concerned about marketing or students’ ability to pay for education in that location.
The proposed initiative involves establishing a small campus initially (to deliver our Human Resources programs) with growth expected in the future to involve other business programs.
The challenge is for the College’s HR department to determine the most critical
environmental factors that will affect its HR policies and practices, staff selection, training, personnel preparation, etc.
You should look for obstacles and challenges that must be overcome.
Once those environmental factors are identified, the HR department must gather all of the related data, trends, issues, etc.
Given all of the information gathered, the College must identify how the environmental factors will affect the College (
in terms of HR issues
) and how they should be addressed, providing remedies to the issues. You have been assigned this task!
Since this is a team of (5 students), it is not expected that you will do a complete environmental scan. Instead, you will identify four (4) specific and distinct critical environmental factors for examination and analysis. Requirements
Assignment Details
:
This assignment requires
1.
formation of teams and selection of a specific city as the basis of the environmental scan. (
No two teams may work on the same country
.) 2.
identification of four (4) distinct environmental factors
to be researched and analyzed. Note: Environmental factors may be selected from the economic climate, globalization, political and legislative issues, technology, demographics, and social/cultural factors. Factors selected must come from at least three (3) different environmental areas. You should not select visas as this would be a common requirement for most (or all) countries.
3.
justification for the selection of the specific factors (i.e., why they are the most critical
ones to consider).
4.
research of the trends, issues, and potential human resources considerations associated
with the environmental factors selected.
5.
an analysis of the human resources impacts associated with the selected critical factors and how they should be addressed by Confederation College including remedies to the 1
HR 522 – Human Resources Planning
Environmental Scan
K. Leroux issues.
6.
a professional introduction and conclusion is required for the report. Due Dates
Determination of teams and selection of a city should be made as per Semester plan document in class
and emailed to the professor. If you have not decided by the due date of January 26 what team you will be on, the professor will assign you to a team and select a city for you.
Assignments are due as outlined on the Semester Plans.
Assignments are not accepted after
this time (except due to extenuating circumstances approved in advance
by the professor). Resources
Research Resources
Students must use a variety of professional, authoritative
resources for research. Of course, appropriate citations and a reference list are required. (Note: Information from Wikipedia or similar resources is not acceptable
.) Assignment Resources
You are also reminded to consider resources directly related to this assignment:
1.
This assignment description (provided in class and available on Blackboard)
2.
The assignment evaluation rubric (provided in class and available on Blackboard)
3.
Relevant chapters in your textbook (
especially Chapters 3 and 11
)
4.
Discussion of selected environmental factors and analysis with the professor, as time allows
Please note that you are invited to consult with the professor but, generally, you should schedule an appointment for this purpose. Support from the professor may be limited during the
week prior to assignment submission, so you are encouraged to consider scheduling appointments well in advance of the due date.

1.
Since this is a research assignment with data involved, the use of tables, graphs, charts, and other visual tools is expected
.
2.
Plagiarism will result in no credit for the assignment . All information that is not your own must be cited with in-text citations and a reference page as per APA 7. A past student’s paper or any sections extrapolated from a past paper is considered plagiarism and will result in a grade of 0 for the entire group. 3.
Any evidence of inappropriate collaboration will result in a reduction in the assignment marks (up to and including a loss of all credit).
4.
The written assignment must be well-organized with sub-sections clearly identified (i.e., sub-section titles).
5.
The written submission must be double-spaced (font size Times New Roman 12), include
a cover page, reference page and follow the APA 7 format. Evaluation of professionalism
The written report will be evaluated on content as well as professional grammar and other writing skills. Please see the criteria on the Rubric. Additional Notes
1.
You are encouraged to date each version of your assignment and keep back-up electronic copies (on multiple computers, a flash drive, DVD/CD, etc.). This will help you
in the event of computer problems and should eliminate the possibility of submitting a version that is not the final one.
2.
Your environmental data and analysis must be specific and thorough
and well-focused on the assignment. 3.
If you need assistance, you should consult with the professor.
4.
The Writing Centre is available to help students with APA 7. It is encouraged to use the Writing Centre services. Possible Environmental Issues to Consider
The following are just a few ideas…
Economic climate
1.
What is the cost of living? Is it higher than in Canada? Would that affect compensation of a Canadian going there? In what ways? Would that affect the possibility of hiring faculty locally?
2.
What is the salary range for faculty there? Would that affect our compensation plans for Canadians or locally-hired teachers?
3.
What is the unemployment rate and what types of people are affected? Would this make it easier or harder to hire faculty locally? 3

In addition to the written materials discussed in the previous question, what else should the supervisor do to orient new letter carriers?
Carol Burgess is a letter carrier and a part-time trainer of letter carriers for the U.S. Postal Service in a major city on the west coast. She trains all new letter carriers in her service area, which encompasses the northern half of her state. Over the past five years she has trained 318 new letter carriers. Typically, the training is offered prior to the new letter carrier’s entry onto the job, although sometimes it occurs shortly thereafter. The training program typically encompasses both the orientation of new employees to the U.S. Postal Service and the development of specific skills needed by the new letter carrier. The latter involves practice in casing mail (i.e., sorting) to appropriate locations of a case in preparation for delivery, reading maps, determining appropriate sequencing of delivery, and customer relations. The total training…

Statement of the ProblemKuala Lumpur Hospital, as we all know, is one of Malaysia's busiest hospitals. This is due to the fact that it admits a diverse range of patients suffering from a diverse range of disorders. These patients have arrived as a result of the health sector that operates in this facility. In other words, the departments within it are quite diverse. As a result, the hospital must deal with a high volume of both existing and new patients. Employees are required to gather patient personal information such as name, address, and so on for all of these admissions. It intends to capture and save their data for further use. Employee admissions, such as physicians and nurses, should also be recorded by the hospital. Furthermore, the hospital must manually record the many departments, rooms, and physicians in hospitals. It is also required to keep frequent records of patients, patients admitted to the hospital, doctor exams on patients, patients who have had surgery, and…

1. Power Notebooks, Inc. plans to manufacture a new line of notebook computers.
Management is trying to decide whether to purchase the LCD screens for the
computers from an outside supplier or to manufacture the screens in-house. The
screens cost $100 each from the outside supplier. To set up the assembly process
required to produce the screens in-house would cost $100,000. The company could
then produce each screen for $75. The number of notebooks that eventually will be
produced (Q) is unknown at this point.
a. Set up a spreadsheet that will display the total cost of both options for any
value of Q. Use trial-and-error with the spreadsheet to determine the range
of production volumes for which each alternative is best.

An electricity power plant was redesigned so that the old system consisting of a
single large display screen which could be seen by all of a team of three operators
was replaced by individual workstation screens for operators. This worked well
until there was a problem which resulted in dangerous gases being released. The
team of operators had great difficulty in finding the source of the problem and
deciding what to do.
Because they no longer have access to all the information, they have to spend
time explicitly co-ordinating their understanding of the situation by talking to
each other. Under the old system, the knowledge would be shared – one operator
would know what was happening with another’s area of the plant without explicit
communication. Although the team’s individual responsibilities would still have
been clearly divided, the knowledge of the system would be shared.
How could the new system of individual workstations be modified to make better use of
distributed cognition?

A small-size cargo company in Dubai has been operating since the year 2000. The total workforce comprises ten employees, out of which five are in sales, three are in operations, one is handling legal and accounts matters, and one manager is also the owner of the company. Total annual turnover is enough to run the company smoothly. Recently another director has joined who brought large investment to the company. The Board of directors has decided to expand the business in other cities and establish offices overseas in potential locations. This expansion policy will directly be linked to the new manpower needs. Therefore, the board has decided to open an HR department with one HR manager and three staff to look after HR operations. The new HR manager has noticed that the company has a very convenient way of recording the data, where all transactions are recorded on excel documents. “this may not work in the new setup with many branches around the world”, he mentioned in the BOD meeting.…
