Module Overview
Leadership is passionate, engaging and empowering.
This module is designed to help you understand that:
Accurate assessment of the situation informs which leadership
style(s) is/are appropriate.
Effective leaders are flexible in effectively applying all styles of
leadership.
Pausing to listen and understand is key to being understood and
influential.
“A leader is best when
people barely know he
exists, when his work
is done, his aim
fulfilled, they will say:
we did it ourselves.”
–Lao Tzu
Module Focus
In this module, we examine and compare various leadership
perspectives. First, we define leadership and review the
competencies of effective leaders to identify which traits are
associated with leaders who are successful. Second, we examine
the consequences of various leadership behaviours and examine
situation- and contingency-based leadership theories. Third, we
explore other perspectives such as participative leadership,
leader-member exchange theory, and transactional and
transformational leadership theory. Fourth, we discuss more
contemporary theories, such as empowering leadership, ethical
leadership, authentic leadership, and servant leadership. The
module concludes with discussions of gender, culture, and global
issues in relation to leadership.

What is Leadership?
Leadership is one of those “
you know it when you see it
” type of concepts. It is challenging to define
universally. Yet effective leaders can shape the future and inspire others to become leaders
themselves.
Listen
Leadership ... you know it when you see it.
Listen to managers such as Margot Franssen (formerly of the Body Shop) and Peter Salussolia
from the Foundation Group in the U.K., as they define leadership based on their own
experiences.
So while one person stresses clear direction, another stresses decisiveness, and others focus on
change or servant leadership (the belief that leaders serve followers by understanding their
needs to achieve their work performance) or the creation of a community that is vital and has
spirit. You have just listened to quite a diverse set of views on the definition of effective
leadership.

Watch
What makes a great leader? by Peter Senge, Author of The Fifth Discipline [3:12]
There are many definitions and perspectives on leadership. But what does it really mean?
In answer to this question, watch Dr. Peter Senge, senior lecturer in Leadership and
Sustainability at the MIT Sloan School of Management, discuss the concept of leadership and
what it means. He defines leadership as different from management and explains why leadership
is not about the role.
As you watch, reflect on Peter Senge’s perspectives on leadership. Are you able to identify
people in your life whose leadership was purposeful, generative and shaped the future of their
community? (“Community” can be a team, department, organization, classroom, or family.)
Trait Theory of Leadership
When you think about the experience and accomplishments of an effective leader, you might think
that they were born to lead. Or, given their years of experience, you just as well might believe they
learned how to become a strong leader.
According to the trait theory of leadership, “leadership depends on the personal qualities or traits of
the leader” (Johns & Saks, 2023, p. 342).
Watch
Traits-Based Leadership [7:03]
What are the distinguishing characteristics of great leaders?
This video examines the historical evolution of the trait approach and the importance of leader
understanding and applying their own unique leadership strengths.
As you watch, identify which traits are your strengths and reflect on how you can leverage them
in a leadership role.

Why We Need Introverted Leaders | Angela Hucles | TEDxBend [14:53]
From the Big Five dimensions of personality discussed in our text, Extraversion and
Conscientiousness have been shown to be the most consistent predictors of leadership
effectiveness (Johns & Saks, 2023).
However, what leadership contributions can an Introvert make?
Watch Angela Hucles, two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist and recent President of the Women's
Sports Foundation, reveal why the special qualities introverts contribute to teams is invaluable for
leadership success.
As you watch, reflect on the competencies and behaviours that an Introvert can bring to the
leadership mix of an organization.

the critical role of leadership is emphasized during times of change. Yet, a universal definition of leadership is non-existent because it is defined by our personal experience. Similarly, describing the difference between leadership and management, both necessary for organizational change, has been described from multiple perspectives. The terminology most used to describe the actions of a leader and the actions of a manager are transformational and transactional. However, in the video, "Leadership vs. Management", Godin (2018) takes a slightly different approach to determine what sets leaders apart from managers by focusing on courage to take responsibility even when risks are high, failure is eminent, and possibilities are only a vision. Considering organizational change, the readings, and video, respond to the following questions:
From your experience how do you distinguish leadership from management? Provide an example of both.

if people leadership does evolve once they either consider themselves as a leader or is told that they are a leader. The reason I say that is because when people are often recognized as a leader, the lead in ways that many other people do not. The good thing about leadership is that it comes with followership. There are many people who recognize the way that others lead and tend to follow in their direction. Followership tends to come with discipline, people who are willing to learn, and also those who are honest. Leaders often have a great influence on their followers which could result in a great impacts. Leadership and followership is such a dynamic duo because of what they make of one anther. A leader would not be consider a leader if he or she did not have the followership they may have. If they have no one to lead and set examples for on how to do what is right, then a lot of the time they would not be considered leaders. Followership is something that would not be what it is, if…

As of followership, there are some strengths and weaknesses that comes with it. Some of the strengths is having the opportunity to follow someone who is willing to guide and show you the in and outs of how things are ran and how to achieve whatever goals you may have. The good thing about followership is is being able to be educated by someone who has done what you are trying to do, if not more. Followership could also help leaders become better at being leaders.
