As a leader in the education field, there are many situations where you have to lead for that specific case. Being a principal, you have to wear many different hats in order to make your school run effectively and efficiently. You have to manage your non-teaching staff members differently than your teaching staff. You have to run the school like a business with the hiring and firing of staff members, maintain and keep a budget, you have to build and maintain community relationships, you have to work and focus on students in multiple ways, plus so much more. Because of this, based on what I learned about situational approach in our class reading, I believe out of all of the different leadership styles and approaches this is the best approach for school administrators. Evaluating the school budget: Leading with purpose when it comes to the school budget is super important. Your budget not only affects you and your staff but also your students. You have to be responsible to not waste any money but be mindful of what you send you money on. That the budget is spent on educational material that furthers what you are already doing on your campus. That you spend your budget with your students and staff in mind and what your end goal is for what you are spending on. Student discipline: When a principal is leading with purpose in the context of student discipline, it typically involves a focus on creating a positive and supportive school culture. I think it’s important that the students have clear set expectations of the school rules and that with those rules come fair and consistent enforcement. So many times the consistent enforcement after breaking the rules set both the school staff and students up for failure. I think positive reinforcement and buy in for the students is important as well. Teacher observation/evaluation : When it comes to leading with purpose for observations, I believe it’s vital to be intentional about setting clear and realistic expectations and goals for your educators. Teachers are already under a great deal of pressure that I don’t want to add to the stress. I want them to be successful everyday in their classroom, not just the days that I observe them. I plan to meet with my educators multiple times before and after their observations. I believe meeting with them multiple times before and after allows for both you and the educator to have all the answers to any questions either of us may have, provide helpful information before the lesson, and provide feedback after the lesson. I want to help set my educators up to be successful at all of their work related goals. Parental Communication : For parental communication, leading with purpose is being as open with parents as you can, and keep them informed as much as possible. So many times I hear from parents that they didn’t know about things because it wasn’t told to them by the school staff. This includes school happenings, events, emergency situations, discipline issues, and major things going on on campus. Curriculum Development: I think leading with purpose when it comes to your curriculum is something that a lot of administrators overlook and put on the backburner. So many time administrators try the newest and greatest curriculum, but haven’t let their current curriculum stay in place long enough to see how their students are learning from it. It’s hard on teachers and students when every year they have a new curriculum. I think the purpose for the curriculum is staying with a model and giving your students and teachers the time and chance to learn from it without changing it.
