Course Description
MGT 2255 is a course focused on the decision-making processes and strategies of businesses. In the course, we will look at how businesses may employ quantitative concepts and techniques in their decisions, to optimize outcomes. Software tools such as Microsoft Excel will be used extensively throughout the semester during the class discussions, cases, and assignments. We will apply quantitative-analytical skills to a wide range of areas such as Supply Chain and Operations Management, Information Technology Management, Finance, Marketing, Accounting, and Strategy.
The material is approached from a managerial rather than technical perspective with a focus on how to apply decision technology and how to interpret the results for guiding management action. This is not a course in mathematics. The focus is on the basic structure and logic of the models, not on their mathematical details and proofs.
After successful completion of this course students will be able to:
Determine the relationship between two or more variables using a regression model and
apply the information gathered from the model to real world problems.
Formulate and solve LP model for variety of real-world problems.
Optimize project scheduling – by, for example, using the Critical Path Method.
Apply Bayesian theory to create the best decision strategy.
Categorize and analyze queuing situations in the manufacturing and service contexts.
Textbook and Course Materials
Customized book: “Quantitative Analysis for Business” published by Pearson, 2nd edition.
ISBN: 0135318203. You will be using two online homework systems/study tools: MyLabOperationsManagment
(MyLabOM) and MyLabStatistics (MyLabStat). We will use only the e-book version of the
textbook for this class. To get the e-book version of our textbook, which is embedded in
MyLabOM, follow the registration instructions document posted on Canvas. You will need
either a credit card or an access code. You may purchase the access code at the bookstore (for
example, if you have a scholarship). However, the instant access (using your credit card) when
you register is less expensive than purchasing the access code in the bookstore. 1
MyLabOM:
MyLabOM is an electronic homework and study platform from Pearson (the
publisher of our customized e-book). We are going to use MyLabOM for homework 3,4,5,6,7,8
and test 2, test 3 and final test.
Again, to gain access to MyLabOM please refer to the two options outlined above.
MyLabStat.
MyLabStat is another electronic platform from Pearson. MyLabStat will be used
for homework 1, 2 and test 1. You will be provided with a free access code for MyLabStat. The registration instructions for MyLabStat and MyLabOM are also posted on Canvas/Modules.

Format of Teaching
Since we have many international students and students who have an internship, this class is
designed to incorporate aspects of remote mode. All lectures are asynchronous and posted
online for every course module on Canvas
. Students will receive weekly schedule with clear instructions what they should read, watch,
review to understand the concepts of weekly topics. Students will find in the weekly scheduled
all requirements for weekly assignments. All weekly schedules will be posted on Canvas under
Modules/Module 1- Week 1, Module 2 - Week 2, …., Module 5 - Week 5. Students can find all
resources they need to succeed in the corresponding week assignments for this course.
Tips for learning new topics
Read the textbook (available in MyLabOM)
2
Watch asynchronous videos that will be posted on Canvas
Review all slides posted on Canvas
Review HW Study Guides Excel templates (if any) of problems posted on Canvas and make your solutions for solving homework problems and test problems
Review practice test questions and problems
Participate in discussions using the discussion board Q&A Forum
opened on Canvas. Study Guidelines
1.
Work with the posted materials for the week. Read the Textbook very carefully for every new
topic. Make notes of the topics you understand and post any unanswered questions you have
in the appropriate discussion area; you are probably not the only one with those questions.
All the questions will most likely be answered before the start of the next week. 2.
Contact us for help. 3.
Try to answer questions that your fellow classmates have. This not only builds your
confidence but also makes you look at things more intuitively. 4.
Complete all assignments on time. Timely work is the key to success in this course.
Discussion
Boards:
Class Café
and Q&A Forum
Discussion areas for materials covered in every topic are provided on Canvas for you to post any
questions you have about the material covered in the week. I will respond to any questions
posted in these discussion areas as soon as I can. A maximum bonus of 5 points
will be awarded
to students actively participate in discussions and help their fellow students by answering their
questions.
Please note discussions are designed for students to post legitimate questions, should always
follow the communication etiquette (discussed below) and should not be used to vent. Any post
that does not match this criterion will be deleted.
Etiquette for Communication
Here are some tips that can help you in your communication. Try to keep your comments and questions short yet concise.
Use one subject per message.
Be complete and use abbreviations sparingly. Make sure everyone is familiar with the jargon
that you may use.
Mistakes are common so don’t criticize people. Ignore spelling errors & other simple errors.
Online correspondence should contain appropriate salutations, not content only.
Follow the same standards of politeness as you do in any other aspect of your life.
Do not ask about grade issues on the discussion boards. Please email to instructor with those concerns.

The Air Force Museum Foundation has commissioned the purchase of 16 Four F Sixes, pre-World War II aircraft. They will
be built completely from scratch to the exact specifications used for the originals. As further authentication, the aircraft will
be made using the technology and manufacturing processes available when the originals were built. Each of the 16
airplanes will be flown to Air Force and aviation museums throughout the country for exhibition. Aviation enthusiasts can
also visit the production facility to see exactly how such aircraft were built in 1938.
Soren Industries wants to bid on the aircraft contract and asked for and received certain cost information about the Four F
Sixes from the Air Force. The information includes some of the old cost data from the builders of the original aircraft. The
