Accountability
"ACCOUNTABILITY IS THE GLUE THAT TIES COMMITMENT TO RESULTS."
-BOB PROCTOR
Accountability
Merriam-Webster defines accountability as "the quality or state of being accountable: an
obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions.”
Accountability is absolutely essential for people walking a path of recovery. It is vital that
people in early recovery take the actions necessary to maintain health and wellness. Accountability can go a long way to ensure the proper actions are taken.
Internal and External Accountability
There are two main types of accountability. Internal accountability is being accountable to oneself; it could also be called "self-discipline." Internal accountability is important, but for recovering people, it often is not enough.
External accountability is being accountable to another person or persons. External accountability is essential for people in recovery because we cannot change the rules in
the middle of the game. By being accountable to third parties, we are held to the agreed-upon standards and limit our ability to rationalize or justify breaking those agreements.
Both internal and external accountability are important.
Accountability is a Two-Way Street
It is said that accountability is a two-way street. This means that, in order to be accountable to someone, one must also hold them accountable. The mutual benefits of accountability can only be experienced if both parties are actively engaged. Would you feel accountable to a friend who never accepted accountability from you?
Common Barriers to Accountability
o
Pride and ego
o
Self-delusion
o
Hypocrisy
What are some of your barriers to accountability?
Assignment: To Whom Are You Accountable?
Take a moment to think about the people in your life who provide accountability. In this exercise, we will look at two levels of accountability. inner-circle accountability refers to the people to whom you are closest, those who you are accountable to on a deep level. Outer-circle accountability refers to the people with whom you have a lesser level of accountability.

In the 1940s two political theorists, Carl J. Friedrich and Herman Finer, debated a critical question of accountability in American public administration: whether professional norms or external controls were necessary to keep administrators accountable. In other words, how much can we rely on the laws to keep administrators in check and how much can we rely on the uniform training of our administrators? Reenact this historic debate. Which do you think is a better accountability measure: external or internal controls and/or the personal character of the administrator? How do you support your choice? As you know the text deconstructs both of these ideas saying that in the current policy environment neither are effective. Why is this the case? What do you think is the solution to keeping administrators accountable in the 21st century?
