Introduction
In North Carolina, there is currently a wide spread of teacher shortages and has since increased the start of school back in August. Many students have returned to the classrooms without a qualified teacher to teach their classes. Instead, classes are being covered by substitutes, Teacher Assistants (TA), or teachers who cover the class during their planning period. The shortage has impacted many counties where some districts may experience teacher shortage worse than others (Mitchell, D., & Grissett, D. (2021, September 11).
When scrolling through school districts' websites, there are thousands of teacher positions
vacancies that are in need to be filled with qualified teachers. There is about 30% of North Carolina students have fully licensed math teachers throughout the state. Because of the teacher shortage, many teachers have to teach face to face and using technology such as Teams and Zoom to teach students remotely in other schools for some counties like Roberson County (Mitchell, D., & Grissett, D. (2021, September 11).
The Department of Education is aware of the teacher shortage in North Carolina. There is
a shortage of qualified teachers for the 2021-22 school year that has impacted all core classes and
grade levels in elementary, middle, and high schools. For some districts, they are offering new qualified teachers sign-on bonuses that are funded through the federal Covid relief dollars (Mitchell, D., & Grissett, D. (2021, September 11). However, what about the teachers who have stayed the course working long countless hours planning and teaching their students yet covering
other classes that do not have teachers. Has the district forgotten about those teachers who are burned out with the lack of local, state, and federal government support? What about those
3
teachers fighting with blood, sweat, and tears to ensure that the students of North Carolina are getting the best quality education possible?
Many factors have impacted the widespread teacher shortage throughout the state and across this country. Lack of increase in teacher pay and the overcrowded classrooms has been the
two main factor that has caused many teachers to leave their classrooms ( Mitchell, D., & Grissett, D. (2021, September 11). There are so many educators who feel unappreciated and not treated as professionals with the benefits and compensation that are being ripped from underneath them. Teachers are moving to other states offering teachers better incentives or choosing to pursue other ventures outside of teaching. From this standpoint, the state of North Carolina is in a state of emergency, with the teacher shortage increasing every year. There must be some resolution that the local, state and federal government can set in place to offer teachers better salaries and benefit incentives such as education reimbursement and health benefits.

Prescribed fire is an important tool for foresters. A recent article describes how decision analysis is used to decide when, where and what to burn. In one example, a number of areas in the Tahoe National Forest in California had been logged and were being prepared for replanting. Preparation included prescribed burning, and two possible treatments were available: burning the slash as it lay on the ground, or “yarding of and merchantable material” (YUM) prior to burning. The latter treatment involves using heavy equipment to pile the slash. YUM reduces the difficulty of controlling the burn but costs an additional $100 per acre. In deciding between the two treatments two uncertainties were considered critical. The first was how the fire would behave under each scenario. For example, the buyer could be fully successful, problems could arise which could be controlled eventually, or the fire could escape entailing considerable losses. Second if problems developed, they could result in…

Suppose a four period weighted average is being used to forecast demand. Weights for the periods are:
Wt-4 = 0.1
Wt-3 = 0.2
Wt-2 = 0.3
Wt-1 0.4
Demand observed in the previous four periods was:
At-4 = 325
At-3
= 361
At-2 = 478
At-1 = 400
What will be the demand forecast for period t? (Keep one decimal place in your answer).

You are the Laboratory manager of a medium sized 120-bed hospital, and you are called to a hospital leadership meeting by the CEO of the facility. You are told that the hospital is having problems meeting some debt responsibility and there is possibility that a budgetary cutback will be needed to alleviate the situation. Each departmental management is being given one week to plan how to accomplish a cost reduction of 10% within his/her department. Should it become necessary. You are also told that this situation is highly confidential because it is not yet known whether the cost reduction will be needed.
Issues and Questions to Consider:
1.What criteria will you use to determine the best plan of action?
2.What type of long-range planning should be considered?

Employees at Precision Engine Parts Company produce parts according to exact design specifications. The employees are paid according to a piece-rate system, wherein the faster they work and the more parts they produce, the greater their chances for monthly bonuses. Management suspects that this method of pay may contribute to an increased number of defective parts. A specific part requires a normal, standard time of 23 minutes to produce. The quality control manager has checked the actual average times to produce this part for 10 different employees during 20 days selected at random during the past month and determined the corresponding percentage of defective parts, as follows: Develop a linear regression model relating average production time to percentage defects to determine whether a relationship exists and the percentage of defective items that would be expected with a normal production time of 23 minutes.
