Torrence Payton 4/10/2023 Behavior Management Comparison and Class Rules Part 1 is a Behavior Management Program Comparison: Upon studying two behavior management programs, Love and Logic (L&L) and Assertive Discipline (AD), I have unearthed their similarities and disparities. Both techniques prioritize the necessity of the educator establishing explicit boundaries and outcomes for pupils, and both depend heavily on the dialogue between the instructor and students. The primary divergence between L&L and AD is the dialogue between the teacher and student. Establishing rigid boundaries and consequences is greatly emphasized in L&L, while AD focuses on being understanding and compassionate. L&L encourages teachers to use a flexible approach when it comes to discipline, whereas AD suggests that a more structured, reward-based and punishment-based approach should be used. In my future classroom, I am intending to integrate both L&L and AD into my behavior management plan. Setting clear expectations and consequences while showing empathy and understanding is essential. Establishing expectations and consequences that are defined and well- understood, while also showing compassion and an understanding of the situation is an important part of the process. I must be flexible in how I communicate with my students while maintaining a more structured system of rewards and punishments. By utilizing a combination of approaches, I can create an atmosphere in which students can feel comfortable and respected, while still learning to make responsible decisions. Part 2 is a Class Rules and Consequences Assignment: I plan to teach a group of elementary school-aged students (5-12) in the special education content area. The following are class rules I believe would be appropriate for this age and content area: 1. behaving and speaking appropriately towards yourself and others is essential. This rule should create a supportive and respectful classroom environment where all students are comfortable expressing their thoughts and engaging in meaningful conversation and debate.
2. Take part in class activities, discussions, and assessments. Active learning and collaboration should be encouraged by this rule. It also supports the idea that students should take ownership of their learning and engage with disgusting literature. 3. Come to class prepared to learn and ask appropriate questions. Students should be able to maximize their learning potential by following this rule. It also helps to create a structured classroom environment. 4. Keep technology use to a minimum. This rule should reduce classroom distractions and ensure students focus on learning. 5. Submit assignments on time. By following this rule, students should be able to meet course deadlines and meet course requirements. Consequences: 1. Minor rule violations will result in a verbal warning from the teacher. 2. The teacher will issue a written warning for repeated rule violations. 3. The teacher will assign a written reflection or essay for continued rule violations. 4. The teacher will assign detention or loss of privileges for further rule violations. 5. When a student violates an extreme rule, the teacher will contact the parent/guardian and refer the student to the school administration
Both L & L and AD have been successful in managing behavior, and I am looking forward to discovering how I can apply both techniques in my classroom. By having a clear set of expectations, consequences and preserving a supportive atmosphere, I am able to create a safe and respectful learning environment for my students.
