Define values. Values are the standards a person develops their life that they hold as most important to them. Define morals. Define organizational ethics. As you read the lesson, answer the following questions in your own words. Lesson 1: Personal versus Organizational Ethics Ethics are someones principles that are instilled in them from a young age and used to guide them through everyday life. Provide an example for each of the following: legal-ethical legal-unethical illegal-ethical conflicts Raising money for a local church in the community woul be legal-ethical. Reprimanding an employee in front of his coworkers is legal-unethical. A doctor has a terminally ill patient that is in constant pain, the patient pleads with the doctor to help her end her pain and suffering with assisted suicide which is illeagal-ethical. Morals are a set of rules a person develops through their life in which their family, friends, church ect may have influenced. Morals can be passed down generations and developed through their beliefs, values, and organizational culture. Organizational ethics is a set of standards or rules that company develops through their beliefs and values that represents their organization and how they feel business should be done. List the four main levels of ethical issues and provide an example of each. The four main levels of ethical issues are societal issues, stake-holder issues, internal policy issues, and personal issues. An example of societal issue is the growing number of homeless in our community yet the average rental prices to continue to increase and the need for affordable housing continues to increase. An example of a stakeholder issue would be a conflict between a company and its employees over working conditions and employee safety. An example of internal policy issues would be a disagreement wihin a company regarding its remote work policy. Some employees might prefer the flexibility of working remotely while others may believe that in person colaboration is essential for effective teamwork. An example of personal issues is a employee constantly arriving late to work because she doesnt have reliable transportation to get her to work. Lesson 2: The Impact of Ethics on Organizations How does a company's ethical behavior impact organizational outcomes? A companys ethical behavior can have a signifigant impact on its organizational outcome. For example ethical behavior helps build a strong reputation and positive brand image and when a company demonstrates integrity, accountabiltity, and social responsibility it gains the trust and loyalty from the customers, employees, and stakeholders. A positive reputation will attract more customers, enhance brand value, therefor ensuring long term success . How does a company's unethical behavior impact organizational outcomes? A companys unethical behavior can also have a signifigant impact on the organizations outcome because unethical behavior within a company can lead to its reputation being damaged, a decrease in customer loyalty, legal consequences,higher employee turnover, loss of invester confidence, and negative financial performance. An example of personal and professional ethics conflicting would be if a person who is prolife got a job as a receptionist at an abortion clinic Check to see how your example aligns with the following: A police officer may personally believe that a law that he is required to enforce is wrong. However, under the Code of Conduct for the New Zealand Police, he is required to obey all lawful and reasonable instructions to enforce that law unless there is good and sufficient cause to do otherwise. A doctor may not personally believe that the course of medical treatment chosen by a patient is the right one. However, under the Code of Ethics for the New Zealand Medical Association, she must respect the rights, autonomy and freedom of choice of the patient. What are some benefits to an organization that has high organizational ethics? Some benefits to an organization that has high ethical standards would be that they are trustworthy and would be a good company to work for. Business ethics offer companies a competitive advantage. Consumers learn to trust ethical brands and remain loyal to them, even during difficult periods. Employees feel more at ease, are more open to taking educated chances, and have a more pleasant work experience. Where do an organization's ethics tend to start? They start with the leaders and trickle down.
