1.
How would you characterize Rankin’s leadership style? What approach do you think is correct for this situation? Why?
Rankin border-lined a selfish leadership style. He was very concerned with his superior’s comments about his team’s work and how it may affect his own promotion. I believe he should have approached this with a servant leader approach. In doing so, he would have to surpass his own self interests to serve others and the organization. His team was falling apart under the process of this project; some were complaining of family problems and another member ended up quitting. If he put aside his own agenda and worked with his team, they would have received the morale they needed to complete the project and meet their deadline easier.
2.
What would you do now if you were Rankin? How might you awaken more enthusiasm in your team for completing this project on time? Suggest specific steps.
At this point, my team is going to need a real morale boost. I would suggest we put aside a set number of days to work through the project together, collaboration could help if we brainstorm and work together. By doing it together and investing the same amount of time and brain power, we will feel less exhausted individually. I would incentivize this collaboration by ordering dinner for us to give us something to look forward to and when this is all over, a few days off to recalibrate would be offered (if permissible)!
3.
How would you suggest that Rankin modify his leadership style if he wants to succeed Dyer in two years? Be specific. Rankin should adjust his leadership style by transitioning into a more authentic style leadership where he can level with his team better. He mentions that he had not seen his family since this project started. This is a common theme with his team members as one voiced the same complaint. Another left the company for less money just to compensate for their quality of life. If he wants to keep his team together and solidify the integrity of future teams, and possibly the company then he will have to be able to hold them together. He should be more transparent about the importance of deadlines and stakes with his team from the start to create an environment of understanding. This will help give his team more insight as well as clarity on what it expected of them. As well as sense of shared responsibility in each task that they tackle.

What might have been in the outcome of the opposite approach had been taken?
