Ethically speaking, I believe the school should not continue to use the test to determine one’s admission into their institution. When using a test for any reason, it is important to make sure that it can be labeled as valid AND reliable. Reliable tests are closely related to what is known as a true score while valid tests are closer to construct scores. (Cohen, 2022) Both kinds of scoring are important because one cannot have validity without reliability and “Whenever we evaluate a test’s validity, we first check that it's reliability is sufficient” (Cohen, 2022, p. 159). Along with maintaining general reliability and validity in a test, it is ethically important to consider the test’s comprehension of different cultural and environmental qualities of the test-takers. Since the test is used by the private school in this scenario appears to only be having issues with one group of test takers. The test administrators should have made more awareness of potential crossovers among various cultures and know the different test/measuring tools that would be applicable to the cultural/environmental upbringings of those taking the tests. (Cohen, 2022) Finally, an ethically valid test should be up to date for the current era that it is being used, maintaining appropriate techniques for administering the test and determining whether the test still applies to today’s test-takers. (Cohen, 2022) Plenty of things can change in the world thanks to research and the growth and development of people throughout generations, so keeping tests up to date is important for reliability and validity.
