Case #4:
Best of Intentions
:
Would you recommend that Cynthia offer the job to Steve and that Steve accept the
job assuming it is offered? What are the pros and cons of your recommendations?
How does the lack of diversity in the organization reflect the organization’s values?
If you were a leader in the organization, what actions would you recommend to
improve the company’s diversity?
Yes, I believe that Cynthia should offer the job to Steve because he is very
qualified for the job and I feel like he should accept the job if it is offered. Steve would
bring diversity to the organization and he would be a great addition to the team. The pros
of offering Steve the job are that he would bring diversity to the workplace and that he is
qualified for the job. The only con that the company has to not offer him the job is that he
may not be the best fit for the job, there could be someone better but that doesn’t mean he
isn’t a good candidate for the position. If Steve was not offered the job the company is
pretty much proving that they are discriminating against Steve because of his skin color
which is just unacceptable. Cynthia and the rest of the company do not stand for that. The
lack of diversity in the organization reflects the organization’s values because the
organization may not be ready to handle a diverse workforce which could stop Steve
from working with the team. It is very unfair and unacceptable because the customers are
saying that he is not a good fit for the company. It would be hard for him to work and
deal with the company if the customers do not accept him no matter how great he would
be at the job and how qualified he is. If I was a leader in this organization I would do my
best to make sure there is no discrimination towards Steve. I would recommend that the
company hire more diverse candidaes like Steve so that he is not the only one. It will
create a diverse community. I would recommend that they give talks and training on
diversity and involvement for all employees. These suggestions would help improve the
company and make the team and workplace more inclusive.

The given scenario involves Joseph and Krystal, who are members of a shared social group and have joined Missile’s Financial Services as middle managers. Each of them reports to a different senior manager, who, in turn, reports to the Managing Director. Periodically, after payday, Joseph, Krystal, and other members of their social group attempt to have lunch together. Joseph expresses distress about his recent experiences with Nicholas, his manager. The issue revolves around a meeting with a new supplier aimed at finalizing a contract. Despite having engaged with the supplier for over two and a half months and reaching a preliminary agreement on costs, Joseph struggled to get Nicholas to review and approve the contract details in the preceding two weeks. The supplier is deemed crucial, offering fast services, a reputable product line, and a favorable cost, even willing to customize stationary at no extra expense. Unfortunately, some managers within organizations purposefully make an employee’s situation miserable with direct intent to force the employee out. This is due to many circumstances such as collective bargaining agreements where a union is represented, specific contract language, or tenure policies. Because of these elements, many managers aren’t able to terminate under regular conditions and will sometimes commit themselves to unethical practices. How can HR minimize unhealthy and potentially illegal situations like this?
HR is the sole representative during any legal proceeding and bears the burden of proving guilt for the company.
