In todays fast paced business environment, leadership needs to able to analyze trends in order to capitalize on opportunities and mitigate the potential damage that could be caused by threats. In addition, when the managers at Novelis have a clear picture of an organizations strengths and weaknesses, they are better able to guide policy. This why organizations like Novelis employ the SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) analysis. “A SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis looks at internal and external factors that can affect your business. Internal factors are your strengths and weaknesses. External factors
are the threats and opportunities. If an issue or situation would exist even if your business didn't (such as changes in technology or a major flood), it is an external issue”
(Queensland Government,
2021)
. This is what makes a SWOT analysis a useful tool when utilized for brainstorming and strategic planning. However, one will typically achieve better results from a SWOT analysis if is conducted with a specific objective or question in mind.
Typically, a SWOT analysis is arranged in a grid format that allows leaders to look at it and make direct comparisons with the Strength and Opportunities blocks are the left side of the chart, while the Weaknesses and Threats columns make up the right side. There are some situations where an entry such as an opportunity will also have its inverse value in the threat column. This is because in the world of business, these items are not always cut and dry and there fore all scenarios must be accounted for. That is why, while useful, the SWOT analysis is only a starting point and managers at Novelis would be advised to flesh out all items as part a full operational review.
