Explain the differences between Research Methods and Research Design.
Research methods refer to the techniques and procedures used by researchers to collect, analyze, and interpret data. These methods are chosen based on the nature of the research question, the type of data needed, and the resources available. Here
are two examples of research methods:
-Survey method: It involves collecting data from a sample of individuals through questionnaires, interviews, or online surveys.
-Experimental method: In experimental research, researchers manipulate variables to observe the effect on other variables
Research design is the overall structure of the research, a plan that outlines how research will be conducted. It is almost impossible to proceed with a research project without a proper research design. The main function of a research design is to make sure that the information gathered throughout the research answers the initial question unambiguously. Research design should be written before conducting any research study. A research design can be:
- Quantitative research focuses on the collection and analysis of numerical data to answer research questions. The goal of quantitative research is to test hypotheses, confirm assumptions and theories, and determine cause-and-effect relationships.
-Qualitative research aims to explore and understand the whole situation by examining subjective experiences, meanings, and contexts. (PEDIAA. 2017).
Indicate when each is used.
Research design is used during the initial planning phase of a research project. Researchers outline the overall strategy and methodology that will guide their study.
Research methods are applied at various stages of the research process to collect, analyze, and interpret data. The choice of methods and design is guided by the specific research objectives, theoretical framework, available resources, and ethical considerations.
Explain what the process of choosing a correct research method and a correct research design entail. The process of choosing a correct research method:
-Begin by clearly defining the research objectives and questions.
- Conduct a thorough review of existing literature.
- Determine the overarching research paradigm that guides your study.
- Assess the feasibility of different research methods in terms of available resources,
time constraints.
- Select a research method that best aligns with the research questions, objectives, and hypotheses.
- Determine the overall research design that will guide the study, including the study's structure, sampling strategy, and data collection procedures.
-Finally, provide a clear rationale for the chosen research method in the research proposal or final report.
The process of choosing a correct research design:
- Considering the approach -Choose a type of research design
-Identifying the population and sampling method.
-Choosing the data collection methods.
-Planning the data collection procedures.
-Deciding on the data analysis strategies. (Scribbr. 2022).

As part of case-study research based in a textile company with over 800 customers, you have been given access to an internal market research report. This was undertaken by the company’s marketing department. The report presents the results of a recent customer survey as percentages. The section in the report that describes how the data were collected and analyzed is reproduced below:
“Data were collected from a sample of current customers selected from our customer database. The data were collected using an Internet-mediated questionnaire designed and administered via the google forms. Thirty-nine customers responded, resulting in an 18.7 per cent response rate. These data were analyzed using the SPSS computer software. Additional qualitative data based on in-depth interviews with customers were also included. Do you consider these data are likely to be reliable? Give reasons for your answer.

An advertising executive claims that there is a difference in the mean household income for credit cardholders of Visa Gold and of MasterCard Gold. A random survey of 15 Visa Gold cardholders resulted in a mean household income of $68,420 with a standard deviation of $9100. A random survey of 6 MasterCard Gold cardholders resulted in a mean household income of $59,200 with a standard deviation of $9200. Is there enough evidence to support the executive's claim? Let μ1 be the true mean household income for Visa Gold cardholders and μ2 be the true mean household income for MasterCard Gold cardholders. Use a significance level of α=0.05 for the test. Assume that the population variances are not equal and that the two populations are normally distributed.
