Writing Assignment 4
Pricing & Marketing Channel Consideration in the
Marketing Program
1.
Task 1 [identify a lesson that interests you]:
(a) Identify the lesson you are focusing on and (b) summarize what,
according to the article, companies in China have begun doing in this area. “Don’t think of sales as isolated events”: this lesson states that that “Providing a seamless experience when and where the consumer chooses can radically increase the chances of purchase” (pg. 89). The article then highlights the three ways China is currently doing this. a.
Deeply Integrated Online and Off-line Sales Channels: a supermarket chain in China called Yonghui (through a merger) connected their off-line stores to a delivery companies app. This allowed Yonghui to stay in business when covid prevented customers to go to their brick-and-mortar stores. b.
Continuous Purchase Opportunities: The article highlights how in China they have technology on their electronic devices that turns every app or webpage into a store. The article used an example of a TikTok video “A Chinese consumer watching a TikTok video can click on clothes she likes and end up in a native store” (pg. 90). c.
AI-enabled Interfaces: In China they have AI powered “chatbots” which are used for customer service. These “chatbots” can understand 90% of customers questions, accounted for over $74 billion worth of transactions on China’s “Singles’ Day” in 2020, and achieved a 3% higher customer satisfaction rating than human staff. 2.
Task 2 [explore example from article]
: For the lesson you have identified, select a topic in the article that you find interesting (e.g., a specific company, specific technology, specific person, specific app, etc.). Find more information about the topic (an internet search may be the easiest way to do this) and report the following about what you learn. (a)
Identify the topic you select (and the page number it is on); (b)
Provide a citation for the source(s) you consulted (if it is a website, you can paste a web link); (c)
Provide a clear summary (at least 3-4
sentences or bullet points) of information you learned (or found interesting) about this example from your research.
The app WeChat is sighted multiple times in the article on page 89.
a.
This app is the largest messaging app in China. Users can add someone on WeChat by simply scanning the other’s unique barcode on the app. This app’s most prominent feature is its “WeChat Pay,” which is simply a virtual wallet that allows users to make payments through the app or in person, much like apple pay. However, WeChat goes farther as users are also allowed to book medical appointments, pay fines, and give money to someone begging on the street. WeChat is one of the first one stop shop apps. https://morethandigital.info/en/wechat-explained-understanding-the-chinese-super-app/
3.
Task 3 [give your own example]
: Considering the article’s “Options for the West” for the lesson you have identified, give an example of how a specific company in the West (perhaps one you work for or one you want to work for) might be able to implement (or at least pursue implementing) something specific from this lesson. For full credit, (a)
identify the specific concept/technology/tactic (CTT) from this lesson the company could implement (or pursue implementing), (b)
clearly state how this specific concept/technology/tactic (CTT) would benefit the company, and (c)
provide a brief analysis (minimum of 3 sentences or bullet points) of how long it may take for the company to implement this concept/technology/tactic (CTT).
I believe that Costco could implement more of an AI Interface to their stores. The article describes an AI interface in China called Dianxioami. This interface can understand 90% of human questions, accounted for over $74 billion worth of transactions on China’s “Singles’ Day” in 2020, and achieved a 3% higher customer satisfaction rating than human staff (pg. 89). I believe that Costco could implement this AI into their stores as I have found it difficult to find certain products inside. The AI Interface could answer questions from customers like: “Where can I find the toilet paper?” and “Do you sell almond milk?”. I believe that this implementation could overall enhance the customer experience inside Costco leading to more returning and
new customers. This AI would also save Costco a large amount on wages as less sales associates will be needed. I believe that Costco could implement this technology into their stores within 5 years. The staff would need to be trained in how to support and fix bugs within the system. Also, the AI Interface will need to be programed to know every in and out of a Costco store. And finally, Costco would use an ample amount of time to launch pilot program in selected areas before going brand-wide with this innovation.
