Internet Affect on Marketing American Public University MKTG 310 Digital Marketing
The Internet has become an essential marketing tool utilized by businesses, but it was not always like that. Before the internet, businesses had to rely on more traditional ways of reaching their audience. As smart devices become more accessible to people around the world, the ability to reach people becomes easier. The development of various platforms like email, social media, blog sites, and ads allows companies to market and segment their audience. In the past, businesses relied more on print advertisements using things like business cards, flyers, newspapers, and billboards to advertise. The traditional method of distributing prints to the public was by mail or paying someone a few sent for every door. This method allowed companies to make contact with potential customers and create brand awareness. Brands like pizza companies added coupons on prints to entice potential customers to purchase. Television and radio were popularized in the 1950s and gave companies the ability to broadcast their advertisements to more people at once. Brands utilized commercials on highly viewed broadcasts to advertise their product or service. Word of mouth is still considered to be the best way to get more customers.
The internet has made it easier for a company to get to its target audience. (Simms, 2022). Social media sites like Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter allow companies to market directly to the consumer. One of the methods of reaching potential customers is by using ads. Google and Facebook ads give businesses the option of choosing their target demographic with the click of a button. The most favorable method is reaching your audience organically, which can be done by using features like SEO and hashtags to place your brand in front of your audience. Amazon is an example of how a company can use the internet to its benefit. In 1995 Amazon started as a small online bookstore that many doubted but as the demand for e-products grew, Amazon was able to adapt. In 1999, Amazon became the biggest online sales platform in the world selling books, DVDs, and music. (Palumbo, 2021). Smart devices were made available to the public which made ordering products more convenient.
