Disability as Diversity Concepts 1. What does it mean to be fully human? What does the concept mean in terms of living with a disability? Being considered “fully human” means that there is nothing outwardly wrong with a person. When people have a visible disability they tend to be viewed as less than or treated as less of a person. In regards to people with disabilities being considered “fully human” is that the realities of living with a disability is just a part of life and it does not make them any less deserving of basic human dignity. 2. Rationale for Inclusion a. Legal - Because of Laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA for short, it is legally required for organizations to make reasonable accommodations including people with disabilities. b. Marketing Sense - People with disabilities also make up a significant part of the population so by not including them you are missing not only the demographic of people with disabilities but their families and friends too. c. Philosophical/Moral - Morally it is wrong to deny someone the same experiences as their peers for an aspect of themselves that they have no control over. 3. How does the ADA (1990) define disability? Someone who has a condition that affects a major life function such as seeing, hearing, walking, breathing, problem solving, talking, or socially interacting with others. 4. Outline key points in the history of disability. How was it defined? How did society or individuals respond to persons with disabilities? In ancient times evidence shows that people with disabilities were eliminated due to their perceived imperfections. Many times they were ostracized from society, or forced into being entertainment for others. This went on until the early 20th century when reformers like Jane Addams begane to advocate for and on the behalf of people with disabilities. Towards the mid 20th century the Us Department of Defense begane to set up support for disabled veterans, this was the beginning of using therapeutic treatments for mental health issues. In the 60’s and 70’s the deinstitualization movement began to gain traction but people with disabilities were still segregated from able bodied peers. By the 90’s with the passing of the ADA inclusion of people with disabilities has become the norm of the recreation field. 5. Describe ways of creating a culture of inclusion. Embracing the values, language, and norms that reflect a positive and welcoming view of disabilities. An example would be viewing someone who has visual impairments with their vision impairments as a part of their identity not the whole identity. As a leader it is important to model appropriate behavior because other staff and participants will model how they behave on the way we behave.
6. Describe the relationship between inclusion and social justice. Inclusion allows for people with disabilities to have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else, which is the main goal of social justice. To afford marginalized groups with the same protections and opportunities as everyone else.
