Emma McGlothin ATM-145 How AI Could be the Future of Fashion: Current Event #1 Over the past few years, Artificial Intelligence has taken over in major ways, people around the world have been using AI to help them with their general daily tasks, and with AI websites such as chatGPT for free it allows people to ask AI questions and get specific answers, so why not implement Artificial Intelligence into the fashion industry? AI is defined as the simulation of human intelligence in machines, meaning it can and will be smarter and faster than us when it’s used. A Business-to-business (B2B) company named Espirit has been open on their use of AI in their company, a business-to- business company is a business model where a business sells or purchases products to and from another business. Fashion United, a business fashion news outlet interviewed Laura Pelster, a digital project manager for Espirit’s wholesale department, about their use of AI in their company. She claimed that manually inputting data was taking too long and that there were too many mistakes being made that could potentially mess up their product data, she knew there had to be a better, and more beneficial way to do this. That’s when she came across Pixyl.ai and its AI powered tagging service “The manual tagging process, which took about 30 days, has been reduced to five days by AI tagging, reducing the time-to-market by 85%.” said Pelster (Sponsor, 2023). In another Fashion United article, Calvin Wong, a fashion innovator, created the Interactive Design Assistant (AiDA) for fashion design, it’s the world’s first designer-led an AI system, he wants it to be used to inspire creators, not to take jobs away from designers. In my opinion, this event is a major step in the fashion industry, I love the idea of AI being used in any aspect of this industry as a resource to help others become more efficient, talented, and sustainable. While researching AI in the fashion industry, I mainly focused on AI in e- commerce (online businesses) and AI in fashion design, there are a few different types of AI used in the fashion industry like; machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision technology, each of these types of AI does something different to help with the process of E-commerce or design. AI in e-commerce is used to help with product recommendations, search and discovery, and customer service, something I found interesting while researching was AI also helps with size recommendations, some
websites have help options that can tell people what size to order based on the company's size standards and other company's size standards , AI is used to help collect the sizing data and give you the best possible size to order. Something you have also probably noticed popping up more while online shopping is Chatbot’s, Chatbot’s are AI generated communication systems to help the consumer get in contact with the company quicker, make product recommendations, arrange exchanges and returns, answer questions, and give style advice. Despite all the benefits of using AI, there are a couple challenges that could come up while using it including effects on human workforce and homogenization. Humans do have a risk of losing their jobs over this, that’s why Calvin Wong made it clear that AI is a resource to help us, not hurt us. Calvin now has a project in line to help increase sustainability and reduce the 92 million tons of textile waste each year by using AiDA. Homogenization in fashion is when styles are produced in large quantities and accepted by many people. This concept also relates to chapter 1 term globalization because of the fashion trends and aesthetic standards, homogenization is probably the riskiest challenge of artificial intelligence because globalization has impacted fashion in several ways. AI is the future of the fashion industry; artificial intelligence is a resource that can be used in many ways to help change the industry for the better, it only makes sense to use AI to help benefit companies and their teams.
