Mini Case Study
Part 1:
The airline industry is so competitive that Air Canada has decided to fix a new
marketing strategy in order to increase the sales and profit of this company. As
an employee of the marketing department of Air Canada, which type of marketing
research do you propose to Air Canada? Try to justify your choice.
Air Canada should be employing all three types of marketing research.
They should be doing exploratory research to identify the main issues and find out
potential hurdles. They can also do an assessment of the current marketing
effectiveness, recognize upcoming trends in the industry and listen to the changing
needs of passengers.
They should also be doing descriptive research to scope out the market as a whole and
gain an understanding. They can conduct surveys and evaluate the data collected. This
can help them customize their marketing towards their customers and audience.
They should also conduct causal research to determine how their marketing will impact
sales and profit. That way, they can also test how different pricing strategies,
campaigns, or service improvements affect their customers’ behaviour and, ultimately,
profit and revenue.
Part 2:
How can Big data be used to improve the marketing strategy for Air Canada?
They can use data collected from booking sites and categorize flyers to narrow down
their marketing audience. They can also analyze data from the past and predict
passenger behaviour to maximize revenue. They can also monitor competitor’s activity
to adjust strategies to stay relevant. They can also collect data from customers to see
how they can best improve their experience.

2) How do ideas for market research arise? First of all, someone has to know something about the capabilities of market research before they can think of it as a possible solution. Most people know something about market research in a general sense. They know it can be used to find out how many people do something or think something. But do they fully appreciate that it can be used to work out how much people are prepared to pay for each feature of a product? Do they know that you can work out the importance of issues that influence customer satisfaction without asking the customer how important each issue is? If you don’t know what something can do, it is fully understandable that it may not come to mind.
