Mathematics Textbook Evaluation Grade Level - Kindergarten Name of text - IM K-5 MATH units 1-2 Publisher Illustrative Mathematics - Kendall Hunt Subject Mathematics units 1-2 Publication Date 2021 What evidence do you find of national standards? The standards are cited and addressedin the back of the curriculum guide. The standards are alwso addressed on each lesson page and the standards that are all aligned to the lesson and unit. What are the major headings under individual lessons? Explain if it more closely follows an “I do, You do, We do” format or the flipped format of “We do, You do, I do.” Explore our math tools – L1: explore our counting cubes L2: explore our pattern blocks L3: Explore two-color counters and 5-frames. There are 22 lessons total between unit 1 and 2 and there are section checkpoints as well as the lessons are grouped into sections. I feel from experience, having used this curriculum its more of a launch, explore, summarize type. Beings it is Kindergarten there is more modeling taking place bfore the students go off as they begin to explore, learn and develop the skills. What resources does it give for meeting the needs of all learners? (ELL students, special education students, gifted students, etc.) This textbook has a box outlined for ELLs and Students with disabilities to have acces to the content and materials. When I have used the upper grades the shaded box also incuded ideas for gifted students. Picture taken out of book below.
Does the text source have explicit vocabulary instruction? Explain . Yes, the book outlines specific words that need to be known for each lesson or unit. The upper grades have more of an emphasis on this versus the kindergarten book for the first two units which is the one that I easily had access to for this assignment. What other resources are available in the textbook? There are resources outlined for the teacher with how to script and approach the various parts of the lessons throughout the book. The teacher also has access to Learn Zillon which are slides of the lesson outlined in an interactive way as well as visual way for the teacher to display via projector and screen. There are interactive parts in the lower grades K-1 that I have seen be beneficial as well. In your opinion does this textbook have students do problem-based/inquiry-based rigorous work?
