Homework #1
27 point HW + 5 point Data Analysis Project grade
1.
Read the Fact Check Article
(posted on Blackboard in a word doc) which was published on December 4, 2019.
a) The headline of the article is Does China burn seven to eight times as much coal as the U.S.?
“Eight times as much” refers to which type of relative quantity—fraction, percent, rate, or ratio? [1 pt]
Rate
b) From the article, identify 4 absolute quantities, 2 percents or percent changes, 1 fraction, and 1 ratio from the article. Copy and paste (with some context) from the article and identify which type of quantity it is. (Not all numbers in the article can be labeled absolute or relative) [4 pts]
1. 289 coal-fired power plants (absolute quantities)
2. seven to eight times the amount of coal (ratio)
3. 1.91 billion tons of oil (absolute quantities)
4. 317 million tons (absolute quantities)
5. China consumed about six times as much coal (Fraction)
6. by 1.8% between 2007 (percent)
7. declined by 4.9% (percent)
c) The article states that “China’s coal consumption was 1.91 billion tons of oil equivalent in 2018. In the same year, the United States consumed 317 million tons.” Show the calculation used to conclude that “China consumed about six times as much coal as the United States did.” [2 pts] To compare the consumption of 2 country, divide the consumption rate of the 2 countries
consumption ratio= China/US
= 1, 910, 000, 000/317, 000, 000
1.9 billion/317 million= 6.02523659306
= 6.03
we can conclude that the consumption of coal of China is 6 times the consumption of US.
d) Was Jim Justice’s press conference statement precisely correct? [1 pt]
Its incorrect because he said its burning 7 or 8 more times than the U.S but it’s actually 6.
e) Why is it not surprising that China has a higher coal consumption than the US does? [1 pt]
They have a larger population which means much larger resources to consume. Burning might
be the fastest and most efficient way for them.
f) There were 1.393 billion people in China and 327.2 million people in the US in 2018. For each
country, calculate the coal consumption rate per person. Express answer with correct units. [3 pts] 6.03(327.2) = 197 Million
6.03(1.393) = 8.4 billion
2. Open the excel file
Illinois Poverty 2019
. This file contains 2019 population figures for each county in Illinois along with the percentage of this population living below the poverty level. a) Sort the counties
by percentage of the population below the poverty level
. Which county had the highest percentage
below the poverty level? Which one had the lowest percent
? [2 pts]
Highest Jackson County 25.4%
Lowest Kendall County 4%
b) In column D, calculate the number
of people living below the poverty level
for each county
.
(Hint: Percent * Total = Number
). Round answers appropriately
. Now sort the counties by column D. Which county had the highest number below the poverty level?
Which one had the lowest number?
For both, name the county and give its number. [3 pts]
Highest Cook County 659,687
Lowest Putnam County 435
c) If a county has a small number of people below poverty level
but also has a large percent
, what must be true about the population of that county? Give an example from the data that illustrates this. [2 pts]
If the county is having a small number of people below poverty
but also has a large percent
level it will be more likely have a lower population
Brown County
14.8%
4,554
673.99
Pope County
16.9%
4,071
688.00
Hardin County
18.0%
3,794
682.92
d) Use AutoSum
to calculate the total population of Illinois
. Also calculate the total number of people in Illinois below the poverty level
. State both here. [2 pts] Total population of Illinois is 12,401,307
People below poverty level
is 1,415,837 e) Use the values from d) to calculate and for f that live below the poverty level? [2 pts]
Take number of people below the poverty
divided by total population
times 100
11.42% of all Illinois residents’ lives below the poverty line
f) What percent of all those who live below poverty level in Illinois
live in Cook County
? Or asked another way--The number of people who live below the poverty level in Cook County
is what percent of all Illinois residents who live below the poverty level
? [2 pts]
13.0%
g)
If you were in charge of distributing money to help the poor citizens in the state, would you choose to give more money to Cook County or to Alexander County? Why? Explain your answer by incorporating the data into your argument. [2 pts]
I would give it to Cook county because they have a higher number of people living under the poverty line, although the percentage is lower than alexander county there is more people.
3. Your Data Analysis Project Data [5 pts]
In class, you chose one of the following topics for your Data Analysis Project: Drug Deaths, Homicide
, or Voting
.
This will be your topic this semester for all questions relating to the Data Analysis Project. Go to Blackboard and open the excel file for your topic
. Notice that there are
multiple pages of data in each excel file; see the tabs at the bottom of the file. Investigate all pages of the data and then answer the questions below. a.
Identify one absolute quantity in your dataset. Write a complete sentence to explain that value using correct units. For example, if the topic were Poverty: In 2017, there were 40.5 million people living in poverty in the US In 2019, there were 13,927 Homicide Victims
b. Identify one relative quantity in your dataset. Write a complete sentence to explain that value. For example, if the topic were Poverty: In 2017, 12.5% of total population of the US lived
in poverty. The one relative quantity I can Identify from the data is Rate of Homicide per people.
In 1998, the rate of homicide per 100,000 people was 6.3
c. Go to the page of the excel file with the State data. Are the values given on that page absolute quantities or relative quantities? If the state values are absolute quantities, calculate the appropriate relative quantity (percent or rate) for each state. Hint: Voting should use percent’s; Homicide and Drug Deaths should use rate per 100,000.
The values are absolute quantities. d. Make a map of the states and their relative quantities (either percent or rate). Copy and paste the map here. (Remember to use the bottom map; right click over the map and choose
