Lesson Plan #9 Date: March 6, 2017 Time: 1:20 - 2:00 Subject Area: Math → 2 by 2 Digit Multiplication Goal/Outcome: To identify and reinforce the multiplication facts that she has previously learned and to use them for 2 by 2 digit multiplication. Behavioural Objective(s): Janie will complete 2 by 2 digit multiplication with 80% accuracy. Materials/Resources: Visual Schedule Paper Pencil Eraser Computer/iPad Worksheet Whiteboard 5 colored dry-erase markers Instructional Environment: IRT Classroom Procedure: We will start with our usual chat and some general conversation, then I will introduce the visual schedule. We will review and practice the multiplication facts 0-9 orally for quick recall and to practice the use of her multiplication strategies for unknown facts using two die. Janie will roll the die and make a multiplication sentence out of the two numbers rolled. For example, if 5 and 6 were rolled 5 x 6 = 30. We will continue this for approximately 5 minutes. Janie can use the whiteboard or paper pencil if she wishes to work them out. Then we will continue by introducing 2 by 2 digit multiplication that she started last day. First, she will watch a short video explaining the steps then we will explain the concept and modelling using
the whiteboard and 5 different colored markers to do an example together the same way that it was introduced in the previous lesson by using a whiteboard and 5 different colored markers (see image below); black will be used for the equation or multiplication sentence, green will show the first step, blue will show the second step, red will be used for the third step and brown for the fourth step. In the example below that I modelled (12 x 34) for the student you must multiply 2 x 4 and regroup if necessary, then multiply 1 x 4 and regroup if necessary, then multiply 3 x 2 and regroup if necessary, and lastly multiply 1 x 3 and regroup if necessary, then add the numbers together. The link for the video can be seen below. http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=MOQsfnE BREAK Then we will continue with the worksheet on 2 by 2 digit multiplication to focus on the objective. The worksheet has and lines to help stress the importance of lining up the numbers neatly. Once the worksheet is completed she will reinforce her 2 by 2 digit multiplication with an online activity. In this activity Janie will be presented with a 2 by 2 digit multiplication equation. She will have to work out the answer and type in the answer using the keyboard. The game keeps track of the time it took to complete the questions and the number of questions. It also displays if the answer is correct and allows you to try again until you get the correct answer. The game can be found at the link below. http://www.softschools.com/math/multiplication/2_digit_multiplication/ 2_digit_by_2_digit_multiplication/
Evaluation: The multiplication worksheet that Janie completed during the lesson will be placed in her math folder to be used as a summative evaluation. The information obtained throughout the lesson such as direct observations, and anecdotal notes will also be used during the progress of the lesson, such as the number of questions attempted and the number correct during the online activity.
