DB – 1 Definitions of Curriculum What is my personal definition of curriculum? At first, that seems an easy question, but upon further review, there are many more facets to curriculum, and its definition, than appear at first glance. Much like its original root meaning, “to run”, I find myself going in circles searching for my definition of curriculum (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). With some help from the textbook, as Gordon, et. al. (2019) points out that curriculum is both a field where people can work and a discipline to be taught, I concluded that my definition of curriculum is a logical presentation of a collection of similar material in such a way as to give each learner access to the core concepts of the focus material. This definition fits well with my curriculum change plan, as one reason for changing the curriculum is the lack of logical flow of the material. As a math teacher, logic and logical progression are at the core of much that is done and instructed in the classroom. Just as Paul pointed out in Romans 1:20 (ESV Bible, 2001), “ For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse”. If the curriculum is laid out with thought and planning, students will be able to see the logical thread leading from the concrete to the abstract, just as Paul spoke about God, what was visible pointed to the invisible. The current curriculum being taught in the middle school math classes is very scattered and not well thought out. Much of the material is disconnected, with inadequate scope and no real sequence, leaving the students confused as they cannot find the logical thread from one unit of instruction to the next. I plan to revise the curriculum, making the scope and sequence fall better in line with the curriculum from 5 th grade and leading into 7 th grade. This will give teachers a better understanding of what knowledge the students should already possess and what they need to master to be well-prepared for future math instruction. At least for now, it makes sense on paper. References: English Standard Version Bible . (2001). https://www.esv.org/ Gordon W. Oliva P. F. & Taylor R.
