Discussion #1 W/K #5
For the videos from “Through the Childs Eyes” (Team, 2023) I chose the lower grades; first and second grade.
In the first video Maya is in the second grade that suffers from reading challenges (Team, 2023). Maya has a hard time reading and mixes up words and sounds, she looks at pictures and see if she could read and then she become frustrated because she cannot figure out the words (Team, 2023). In the second video Tommy is in the first grade and has problems with math. He always falls behind (Team, 2023). Tommy expressed in the video that in class they use a number line and number bingo to help with math (Team, 2023). In the third video Aiden has problems writing (Team, 2023). Aiden cannot write with a pencil and is frustrated and always worries about what they will write. A useful tool that Aiden enjoys using is shaving cream.
In the fourth video Julia is in the second grade and she suffers from attention issues. Julia has a hard time
paying attention to her, she calls herself a daydreamer or in La La Land. Julia spaces out during class. A strategy Julia likes to use is to listen to her teacher and doodle. If Julia feels fidgety, she will ask her teacher if she could take a walk. Another useful tool Julia likes to use is a fidgety toy or tool to help her in
class. In the fifth video Stephan suffers from Organization challenges (Team, 2023). Stephan has a hard time doing things in a step-by-step process and becomes frustrated or confused. When Stephan puts down something he forgets where he puts things then blames others where he put them. Stephan realizes where he put them and apologizes. Stephan has learned a strategy by drawing and writing his thoughts, then Stephan is able to think about what he must do.
Dyslexia affects children both at home and at school. Teachers are to model and be patient with any students no matter if they suffer from Dyslexia or not. The teachers are to model how to help the students to overcome or deal with the disability. Teachers are to create a structured, organized classroom environment. Parents at home can model the same behaviors with their children. Sometimes which is sad that parents do not put much effort into their children if they are from a low income. Parents with higher incomes are better at helping the students set an example.
In a real form of teaching in my classroom we do reading or literacy on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, we do math. On Fridays we practice emergency reading. This helps build both sides of the brain. Starts the foundation. We do everything with hands on activities. The children are way more engaged in the hands-on activities than having paper-pencil activities.
I am going to be completely honest I did not know all these signs were Dyslexia. I have had these problems growing up and now in my adult life. I have learned how to cope with my disabilities. Found different ways to do things. For example, if I come up with a thought, I must write it down, so I do not forget. We go through so many feelings at one time. I must color coordinate things to help me be organized. I say everything has a spot for a reason. So, I remember where things go.

Discussion #2 W/K 5
In the real world I work at a school called CECLA (Chester Early Childhood Learning Academy). All students in CECLA come from low income or are on the poverty line. A lot of the students have social emotional issues. The children do not know how to handle their feelings. I have also noticed a lot more children are coming in with Autism. I am not a doctor. I have been working with children since I was 18 and I am now 41. Long time. Either the children are angry, hyper and defiant or they are spaced our baby
ones. I also suffer from a disability. I half hearing with hearing aids now, auto processing disorder, and attention deficit disorder. So, I know what it is like to have a disability. I love like Jesus does. I accept everyone as they are. I may not like it but I have to accept them and love them anyway. Jesus is patient with us, and I am very patient with my students. Jesus loves no matter what. So, I must do the same. Everyone wants to find their spot in this corrupted world. It is my responsibility to be that light amongst the darkness. These students come from a tuff home life. I can also relate to that. I have come from a very ruff background growing up. I also created a ruff home life until I found Jesus and worked on myself and a little of my purpose.
Everyone just wants to be loved and accepted. I make sure in my classroom everyone feels loved and accepted. Not every day is rainbow and sunshine, but I am patient and loving. That’s what the students need. This world is turning for the worse. That’s another subject. So, it is my responsibility to show the love and patient love of God has for us towards everyone I come across and teach.
