Content descriptor
To begin, the content descriptor that I have chosen for this assessment is “Measurement and Geometry (ACMMG061) – Using Units of measurement: Measure and compare the lengths and capabilities of pairs of objects using uniform informal units.” (australiancurriculum.edu.au) Curriculum connections
The concept I have chosen is about being able to understand and identify the difference between small, medium and large using objects or different materials. In my experience, size comes into when we are buying shoes for example: When need to try on a variety of different shoes to determine whether the shoe is too small or too big for your foot. Also, when measuring how tall you are is another way of incorporating size into your everyday life by standing against the wall and using a tape measure to determine if you are short, medium height and tall. Size can be taught in the classroom on an everyday basis when giving the children an opportunity to measure up different objects for example: putting a glue stick and a ruler next to one another and encouraging the children to using their knowledge of measuring to be able to identify which resource is bigger or small. This concept is a great way to teach the children about maths skills that we use in our everyday
lives. This includes using mathematical language such as Big and small, which are used in our everyday language and in the classroom to describe different objects and when engaging in conversation’s. Resource
The resource that I have chosen to incorporate for a lesson is using two different objects such as an apple and a banana. I will introduce this activity by first having a discussion on

After the discussion the teacher will have an apple and banana and then using the two fruits provided, they will be placed next to one another and the children as a whole group will use the skill of measurement to identify which fruit is bigger using length, width and height. An apple is wider and is a 3-dimensional shape, whereas the banana is long but not as wide as an apple. Then the activity will end with another discussion on how we thought the activity went and asking the children whether they now
have an idea of size. After this, the children will then have a discussion with the teacher and their peers about what they thought the activity was about and what they have learnt from this activity. Rationale
When engaging in this hands-on experience, the children will gain a better understanding and knowledge on being able to compare the lengths and capabilities of different objects. This experience reflects on everyday life as the children had to figure out which fruit was smaller, and which one was bigger engaging in size. This resource can help enhance engagement by making it more exciting than using just work sheets or ICT resources, it draws on students interests and also promotes healthy eating by using the fruits. “
We want to create young mathematicians who understand and enjoy the subject. Mulligan et al. (2012, p. 9)” During this activity the mathematical language that is being used is big, small, large and medium which identifies size. In our everyday lives we use size in a range of contexts such as sizing clothes using small, medium, large and extra-large. When buying a meal, you have the choice of small, medium or large which indicates what size meal you will have. This hands-on experience encourages the children to not always rely on technology to learn, instead having different resources for learning such as books, work sheets and using real life objects.

Measurement and Geography
Selected levels:
Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 Year level: Year 2 Content descriptor
For this year level, year 2, I will further extend the learning of Size by focusing on area, volume, length and capacity. My content descriptor will be Measurement and Geography (ACMMG037) – compare and order several shapes and objects based on length, area, volume and capacity using appropriate uniform informal units. (Australian Curriculum). Curriculum connections
The concept is now going more into depth, as the children will begin to start learning about area, volume and capacity and while still engaging in length just extending their learning. This extends on the learning from Year One with comparing lengths. This builds on the year before as the children will need to use volume to measure different things by comparing a table and a cup. A cup has volume as you are able to put something inside of it, a table does not have volume as there is nowhere that you are able to place anything inside of the table. These skills are seen in the real world when packing boxes to determine how much can fit in the box by using length, width and height. Or when filling up a cup with some water by pouring the water and filling it up until it cannot hold any more water as the cup will be full. Engaging in these everyday experiences teaches the children the importance of using and gaining knowledge of size, volume, length, area and capacity. This can also be used in the classroom on a daily basis when placing books into a box, figuring out how many books will be able to fit into the box until it is full by using volume.
