Discussion Thread: Common Core and VA Standards Comparison The grade level that I have selected for The Interdisciplinary Instructional Planning Project is Kindergarten. Therefore, I will be using the kindergarten grade level to compare and contrast the standards within the common core standards and the Virginia State Standards in Math. After I read and reviewed the Common Core state standards for math and compared it to the Virginia State standards in math the main differences that stood out to me was Virginia State standard requires applying technology tools be an integral part of teaching and learning in math. The common core standards do not mention the use of technology in any form. Another difference within the standards is the overview topic of instruction. Common core focuses on counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data and geometry. Virginia State standards focuses on number and number sense, computation and estimation, measurement and geometry, probability and statistics, patters functions and Algebra. Many of the mathematical topics fit into the same categories however, Common Core state standards focuses more on operating, representing and relating whole numbers and Virginia focuses on more detailed topics like probability and statistics. In my opinion, both standards offer great information, material and information on mathematical standards of learning however, if I had to choose one to follow more it would be Virginia Standards of Learning. The standards are broken up in many sub standards with detailed explanations of each math standards and skills. Virginia Standards also offer more information and examples to easily incorporate technology tools in the classroom. Overall, I feel very fortunate to have so many resources and tools available to me as a student and educator. In the book of Matthew, we are reminded that God provides us with what we need, 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’   32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them”(Matthew 6-31-32 NIV-Bible Gateway, n.d). Being a teacher in these modern days can be intimidating and worrisome however I believe God always provides and we see it through all information and knowledge he lays before us.
