Assessment System Todd is a 9 th grader. He is the oldest in a low-income family of six. Because his parents are not home very much, Todd takes on responsibilities with his brothers and sisters. The family lives in a small home, so it’s hard for Todd to get the privacy he needs to do his homework. Consequently, he often does not hand in any homework. He has a very positive attitude toward school, and he is very attentive in class and tries hard to do well. However, it is the end of the 2 nd semester grading period and it is time to calculate Todd’s final semester grade. Your class uses the following grading policy: Final Grade (weights) o In-class work 25% of the final grade o Homework 25% of the final grade o Tests and quizzes 50% of the final grade The grading scale in the school is: 95-100 A 85-94 B 75-84 C 65-74 D <65 F Part 1 Todd’s averages are in-class work 85%; homework 30%; and tests and quizzes 70%. (85×0.25) +(30×0.25) +(70×0.50) 21.25+7.5+35= 63.75
1. What is Todd’s overall percentage score in the course (weighted average as you did in Assignment 2b)? 63.75 o What letter grade is this? _F_ 2. What letter grade would you give Todd? Why? Considering my teacher's evaluation and the available data, I would maintain Todd's assigned grade, which is an F. While I may empathize with Todd's circumstances and make efforts to support him by providing reminders for assignments or offering encouragement throughout the semester, I strive to maintain objectivity in my grading process. 1. Does the grade you are giving Todd reflect his academic performance as per your calculated percentage score? Please explain. Yes, the grade assigned to Todd (an F) reflects his academic performance based on the calculated percentage score. Todd's overall percentage score is 63.75, falling within the range specified for a grade of F according to the provided grading scale. The grading system is designed to objectively represent a student's performance, and in Todd's case, his percentage aligns with the criteria for an F as per the school's grading scale. The grade reflects his academic achievements in the course, considering the weighted averages of in-class work, homework, and tests/quizzes as outlined in the grading criteria. 1. Can you change the grading scale for your class? Please explain. As a teacher, you may not have the authority to change the grading scale for an entire class. Grading scales are typically set at the departmental level, and changes to such scales typically require approval from the school administrator. Part 2 1. After reviewing the Chapter 15 PowerPoint Presentation and reflecting on Todd’s experience, how could using factors other than a student’s academic performance help Todd in this situation? After reviewing the Chapter 15 PowerPoint Presentation and reflecting on Todd's experience, incorporating factors other than a student's academic performance can provide a more complete assessment of their overall capabilities and potential. While academic performance is a crucial aspect of grading, considering additional factors can offer a more holistic view of a student's strengths and challenges. Some ways these factors could help Todd in his situation are looking at his effort, attendance, attitude, and participation. 1. In Chapter 15, the author discusses Individual Student- Referenced , Norm-Referenced , and Standards-Based grading. Please provide one example of how each is used.
