ANSWER SHEET – COLORFASTNESS TO CROCKING 1. Did you record a video of your lab completion? Failure to submit a video following all instructions will result in a zero assigned for this Assignment. Yes! 2. Discuss, in your own words, your findings from the experiment. Ensure you answer the following questions (a minimum of 2-3 sentences per question is required). a. Use the “Colorfastness to Crocking Scale” – What was the colorfastness rating for the dry crocking test on the white fabric? Why did you give it this rating? Explain with full sentences. (1 pt.) For the dry crocking test, I rated it a 1.0 as a negligible transfer. I rated it this because even with additional force and multiple attempts, the colorfastness really did not appear on the swatch. There was the slightest bit of color, but the rest of the swatch was pretty much completely white and had no transfer. b. Use the “Colorfastness to Crocking Scale” – What was the colorfastness rating for the wet crocking test on the white fabric? Why did you give it this rating? Explain with full sentences. (1 pt.) For the wet crocking test on the swatch, I voted it a 3.0 as a noticeable transfer. This colorfastness was definitely harder to attempt because the wet swatch was harder to rub on to the denim. Although, there was definitely a good amount of the denim that transferred to the white swatch. It was definitely noticeably blue compared to the beginning. c. Discuss your process of abrasion, white fabric against the denim fabric. (1 pt.) The process of abrasion that was used was a back-and-forth motion of wet/dry white fabric rubbed against a piece of denim fabric. It damaged the sample and therefore resulted in little to a lot of colorfastness transfer. d. How was the process different for the dry sample vs. the wet sample? (2 pts.) The wet sample process was different from the dry sample process because the wet sample was tougher to rub against the denim. It was more stiff compared to how the dry sample just basically glided across the sample. This also resulted in a difference in the colorfastness to crocking scale. 3. Define colorfastness. (2 pts.) Colorfastness is the resistance of the material to change any of its color characteristics. In this case, it had to do with the transfer of the denim to the adjacent materials, the white swatch. 4. What are two specific situations in which a consumer should be concerned about the colorfastness of a pair of denim deans? Write a minimum of 3 sentences to thoroughly explain the two situations. (2 pts.) The colorfastness of a pair of jeans should be a concern to a consumer because it could help stop the transferring of blue dye onto other surfaces. Something I have noticed is that sometimes if I sit in the grass or something and it is even slightly wet, I stand up with green and blue grass and denim stains from it being wet. Therefore, consumers should make sure that their denim jeans have good colorfastness because of grass, wet surfaces, laundry too, etc. 5. List the sources you used (embed links below). If you used the course textbook, write “Course Textbook Page ___”. (1 pt.) https://www.gester-instruments.com/about-the-color-fastness-of-denim-clothes_n128
