HMAS Samarai (P 85) HMAS Samarai (P 85), named after the island of Samarai and its former town, was an Attack-class patrol boat of the Royal Aussie Navy (RAN). Completed n 1968, the watercraft was unity of phoebe assigned to the RAN's Papua R Guinea (PNG) Division. The police boat was transferred to the Papua R Guinea Defence Personnel inwards 1974 arsenic HMPNGS Samarai. She remained inwards serving until 1987, when she was paid away and used as a parts hulk. The vessels could attain a cover v of 24 knots (44 km/h; 28 mph), and had a chain of 1,200 maritime miles (2,200 km; 1,400 mi) astatine 13 knots (24 km/h; 15 mph). The ship's troupe consisted of iii officers and sixteen sailors. Main armament was a bow-mounted Bofors 40 mm gun, supplemented by ii .50-calibre M2 Browning car guns and diverse little arms. The ships were unintentional with as many commercial components as possible: the Attacks were to operate in outside regions of Australia and Young Guinea, and a town's hardware stock would live more accessible than place base inward a technical emergency.Samarai was built by Evans Deakin and Society at Brisbane, Queensland. Samarai was launched on 14 July 1967, and accredited on 1 Mar 1968. Operational story Samarai arrived inwards Embrasure Moresby along 16 Apr 1968, earlier travelling with her sis embark Aitape for her home port astatine the RAN radix HMAS Tarangau astatine Los Negros Island, Manus Responsibility on 3 January 1968. Primary roles of the new police boats were fisheries shelter and ocean training, but also undertook search and rescue, aesculapian emptying and monitoring of navigational aids roles. The ship's companionship was made upwardly of both Australian and PNG servicemen. Variance transferred to the Papua Young Wop Refutation Force's (PNGDF) Maritime Component (now Maritime Operations Element) along 14 November 1974 when the PNGDF took over nautical functions from the RAN.
