Unit VI Assignment
As with the last live stream I found this lecture to be very informative and I appreciate
the presentations. It is refreshing to still have some form of interaction from instructors in an
online course. My entire bachelor’s program did not have anything like these streams for us to
review material and so far they help me to better understand the material. Once again there are
several similarities between the lecture and my everyday job as the Occupational Safety
Superintendent at my base but also some key differences.
1.
The first major difference that I noticed and need to become more familiar with is the
hearing conservation program section. While the Air Force has a hearing conservation
program and thousands of employees are enrolled in it, the occupational safety staff
don’t manage the program. We have a Bioenvironmental Engineering section that are
industrial hygienist by trade and monitor all the hearing loss cases for the base. We
will step in to assist when asked but for the most part we are hands off in this
program. As an enterprise, we check all the OSHA requirements however the way we
do it is a little different than civilian companies.
2.
Respiratory protection is very similar to hearing conservation in how the Air Force
manages the programs. The Bioenvironmental Engineering section also manages the
program as they are the true experts in identifying the hazards employees will be
exposed to. We all try to assist whenever possible. Several of my people have
attended the OSHA 521 course to gain a better understanding of the programs but we
are by no means experts.
3.
Another topic that I found interesting and that I preach at work is the actual hygiene
and sanitation of PPE. We had an issue in which personnel were breaking out in hives

Case Study – The New Engineer
Jeff was just hired by GSI, Inc. to be their Environmental and Safety Coordinator. This is Jeff's first position after completing his engineering degree. He had taken a course in safety engineering as part of his studies and felt confident that he could handle the job.
Management at GSI, Inc. has assured him that they are committed to maintaining a safe workplace. They have never had an individual dedicated to this task full-time. They will implement his recommendations if he can justify them.
As Jeff begins to get familiar with the operations, he spends considerable time on the production floor. He notices workers clean their tools before break with a liquid from an unmarked 55-gallon drum. They also use this liquid to clean residue from their skin. They use paper towels to dry their tools and hands, throw these towels in the trash, and head to the break room for a snack and/or smoke.
In talking with the workers, Jeff learns of some of…

Chapter 3. On a Thursday, Jeanie decided that she would like to have a dinner party for a few of her colleagues and was wondering if Saturday was a feasible day to have the party or not. She wanted to get an idea of how many hours of work she would need to do to make a reasonably fancy dinner ready by 6 PM on Saturday. She decided to create a project network based on the activities she thought were essential for doing this. You are employed as a mechanical engineer within an unnamed research center, specializing in the
development of innovative air conditioning systems. Your division is tasked with providing computer-based
modeling and design solutions using computational fluid dynamics through ANSYS software. Your primary
responsibilities involve the analysis of horizontal channel dynamics to meet specific criteria. Under the
guidance of your immediate supervisor, you have been assigned unique responsibilities within an ongoing
project. As a member of the research team, your role includes constructing an appropriate model and
executing a sequence of simulation iterations to explore and enhance channel performance. Figure 1
provides a visualization of the horizontal channel under consideration. Consider 2D, incompressible, steady
flow in a horizontal channel at a Reynolds number of 150. The schematic below illustrates the channel flow,

Your friend Dave loves hanging on the OU banner poles attached to the light poles on campus,
this is despite your strong disapproval of their behavior. As an engineering student you are super

the banner pole is aligned with their arm that is holding onto the pole (ie. at 45°).

David Aquino, engineering director, started out the day uptight. His young child
had the flu the night before, and he had been up all night to help. Upon arrival at his
office, David had to make urgent phone calls to approve a two-week overtime work plan
due to a plant fire the night before and to plan for a product committee meeting the next
day to counter environmental concerns about a wastewater treatment plant.
Then he spent 30 minutes reviewing the qualifications of new candidates and
decided on one. He asked for salary information and wanted to examine the offer before
it was sent. He asked for further justification for the budget requested by industrial
engineering for a minicomputer. Without reading it, he approved the research proposal
from material engineering. He rejected an invitation to speak at a regional meeting of the
Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers by giving an untrue reason.

You are a biomedical engineer working for a small orthopaedic firm that fabricates rectangular shaped fracture
fixation plates from titanium alloy (model = "Ti Fix-It") materials. A recent clinical report documents some problems with the plates
implanted into fractured limbs. Specifically, some plates have become permanently bent while patients are in rehab and doing partial
weight bearing activities.
Your boss asks you to review the technical report that was generated by the previous test engineer (whose job you now have!) and used to
verify the design. The brief report states the following... "Ti Fix-It plates were manufactured from Ti-6Al-4V (grade 5) and machined into
solid 150 mm long beams with a 4 mm thick and 15 mm wide cross section. Each Ti Fix-It plate was loaded in equilibrium in a 4-point bending
test (set-up configuration is provided in drawing below), with an applied load of 1000N. The maximum stress in this set-up was less than the
yield stress for the Ti-6Al-4V…
