Him 2255c PROMPT: Minimum of 150-words. Your post must incorporate college-level writing in paragraph form. Simply listing the answers (i.e., in bullet form, etc.) will result in no points awarded for the initial post. You are a new graduate and recently landed your first coding position. You will be employed by a pathologist to code for their professional services. You vaguely remember learning laboratory and pathology coding in college but you aren't sure that you recall enough to confidently perform these coding duties. Identify at least three things that you might do to help you prepare for assigning CPT codes in this position. ANSWER; If I were to be given an employment opportunity by a pathologist to code for professional services and couldn't recall enough to confidently perform my duties there would be a few steps I would take to brush up. The first thing I would do is refer to the coding guidelines for pathology and laboratory services. I would also need to readdress and brush up on the modifiers. Another step I would take to ensure that I am ready is to find coaching videos online and/or reach out to my network of coding professionals for advice. Understanding and having a specific coding position will narrow down what I need to retain for the position. According to the textbook, The coding guidelines for pathology state that services for pathology and laboratory are provided by a physician or by technologists under the responsible supervision of a physician. Separate or multiple procedures are appropriate to designate on the same date by separate entries. The guidelines also give a list of unlisted services and procedures with the accompanying codes. Under the special report, it states that a service that is rarely provided, unusual, variable, or new may require a special report. Information should include an adequate definition or description of the nature, extent, and need for the procedure; and the time, effort, and equipment necessary to provide the service (Smith et al., 2021). Modifiers are used as descriptions of services. Some examples of pathology modifiers would be Increased procedural services, reduced services, discontinued procedures, or distinct procedural services. There are also modifiers for laboratory services. These modifiers are used to describe how, when, and where testing and results are provided. According to 24/7 Medical, a few examples would be modifier 92, alternative laboratory platform testing, and modifier 91, repeat clinical diagnostic laboratory test. Modifiers in Pathology are equally important. TC and -26 are modifiers to identify whether a component is technical or professional. Modifiers -24 or -79 are used to describe if a patient's visit was surgery or E/M visits during the postoperative period (24/7 Medical Billing Services, 2023).
Last but not least, utilizing a professional network and videos are supportive as well. When going through college we develop a network of professionals that may include our instructors, program directors, or colleagues from internships. These individuals are great resources and are usually eager to help. They have the experience and knowledge to give you guidance. We also learned in college that videos are a great tool for learning and understanding procedures and techniques used. No matter what, there are always resources to be utilized.
