Laura Yates Prof. Teresa Allen HIM 2302 Basic Coding 2 11/08/23 Module 9: HIM Case Study 4.17 Hospital-Acquired Conditions and Present on Admission 1. What is the error, and what impact does it have on the reimbursement? Wrong POA is assigned to L89.614, pressure ulcer of the right heel, stage 4. POA yes should have been assigned for L89.614 because it was POA and not acquired during the hospital stay. The POA assignment affects the DRG assignment and causes wrong reimbursement to the hospital. The POA changes the DRG from 192 to 190 giving the hospital more reimbursement. 2. What action might need to be taken to justify your conclusion of coding error? Query the physician/provider to confirm the pressure ulcer was POA and if there was any progression in stage of ulcer while admitted to hospital. After clarification it would justify the change of POA to yes.
