MUL 1010: Music Appreciation
Test 2 Essay Questions
1.
What were some of the problems that led the Council of Trent (Counter-Reformation)
to regulate Catholic Church music?
Concerns concerning liturgical music were among the challenges the Catholic Church was facing
when the Council of Trent convened in the 1500s. The council's goals were to combat secular
influences on sacred music and address abuses of the liturgy, such as improper behavior during
Mass. Some religious music was starting to seem too commercial. It was emphasized that the
text in liturgical music needed to be understandable because intricate compositions made it
hard for the crowd to follow the lyrics. The artists' expertise and moral behavior were also
highlighted by the council. The ultimate goal of the changes was to give the Catholic Church a
more standardized and serious liturgical experience. Consequently, as part of the Tridentine
reforms, uniform texts for the Mass and liturgical music were issued.
2.
Compare/Contrast the lives and careers of J.S. Bach and G. F. Handel.
Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, both born in 1685, were Baroque
composers whose lives and careers shared similarities while demonstrating distinctive
differences. Bach, a German composer and musician, spent much of his career in church
positions, creating an extensive body of religious and secular works. His compositions were
characterized by intricate counterpoint and deep religious expression. In contrast, Handel, a
German-born composer who later became a British citizen, achieved fame in England through
his operas, oratorios, and instrumental compositions. Handel's works were marked by
grandiosity and dramatic flair, catering to the public tastes of his time. While both composers
were prolific and shaped the Baroque era, Bach's output leaned heavily towards religious
compositions, showcasing his mastery of polyphony, while Handel's diverse repertoire
encompassed opera and oratorio, highlighting his theatrical and more accessible style. Despite
these differences, both Bach and Handel are considered masters of their craft, leaving an
enduring impact on the world of classical music.
3.
Discuss the effect of the growing middle class on music during the Classic period.
The classical era saw the rise and expansion of the middle class, which had a significant effect
on the music industry. The need for music as a medium of entertainment and cultural
expression grew along with this social stratum. In response to this need, composers like Mozart,
Haydn, and Beethoven created pieces that were easier for a wider audience to enjoy. With the
growing middle class as a major audience for musical events, the patronage system—which had
previously been mostly dependent on aristocratic support—saw a change.
The content and
style of compositions were affected by this shift in patronage, with a stronger focus on
emotional expressiveness, clarity, and well-balanced frameworks. A greater distribution of
music was made possible by the growth of subscription series and open performances, which
further democratized access to the arts. Therefore, the Classical era saw the democratization of
music as performers and composers tailored their pieces to appeal to the growing middle-class
audience's tastes and preferences.
4.
What were some of the perceived weaknesses of Baroque serious opera that led to
the development of comic opera in the classic period?
The perceived weaknesses of Baroque serious opera that spurred the development of comic
opera in the Classical period were rooted in the desire for a more natural and relatable
theatrical experience. Baroque serious opera, often characterized by elaborate plots, ornate
arias, and mythical or historical themes, was criticized for its artificiality and emotional excess.
Audiences and composers sought a departure from the stylized conventions of Baroque opera,
leading to the creation of comic opera. This new form introduced more realistic and everyday
characters, relatable situations, and a lighter musical style. Composers like Mozart and Haydn
played pivotal roles in this shift, infusing their comic operas with humor, wit, and a focus on the
ordinary human experience. The emergence of comic opera in the Classical period marked a
departure from the grandiosity of Baroque serious opera, offering a more accessible and
entertaining form of musical theater that resonated with a broader audience.
The following question is for extra credit
1.
Draw a diagram of sonata form. Include as much information about the form as you
can.
The sonata form is a structure commonly used in the first movements of many classical
compositions, particularly in the Classical and Romantic eras. It typically consists of three
main sections: the exposition, development, and recapitulation.

QUESTION 2
A company needs to choose one supplier for a particular type of silicon wafer used'in the production of
semiconductors. The company has three options. Supplier A sells the silicon wafers for $2.50 per wafer,
independently of the number of wafers ordered. Supplier B sells the wafers for $2.40 each but does not
consider an order for less than 2,000 wafers. Supplier C sells the wafers for $2.30 each but does not accept
an order for less than 3,000 wafers. Assume an order setup cost of $100 and an annual requirement of 20,000
wafers. Assume a 20% annual interest rate for holding cost calculations.
a. Which supplier should be chosen to minimize the total annual cost for the wafers, and what is the
optimal order quantity?

You are a biomedical engineer working for a small orthopaedic firm that fabricates rectangular shaped fracture
fixation plates from titanium alloy (model = "Ti Fix-It") materials. A recent clinical report documents some problems with the plates
implanted into fractured limbs. Specifically, some plates have become permanently bent while patients are in rehab and doing partial
weight bearing activities.
Your boss asks you to review the technical report that was generated by the previous test engineer (whose job you now have!) and used to
verify the design. The brief report states the following... "Ti Fix-It plates were manufactured from Ti-6Al-4V (grade 5) and machined into
solid 150 mm long beams with a 4 mm thick and 15 mm wide cross section. Each Ti Fix-It plate was loaded in equilibrium in a 4-point bending
