ME 541 – Engineering Design: A Decision-based Perspective Fall 2023 Homework 1: Decision-making methods Due: Tuesday, September 12 th 2023, 11:59 PM (Eastern timezone) Name: Email: Maximum Points: 20 Submission: This assignment must be submitted online as a single PDF file on Gradescope. Please use this page with your name and email as the cover page for your submission. 1. Decision Method In this part, you are asked to choose two decision-making methods from the list below (discussed in Module 2, Slide 5). Weighted sum of attributes Analytical hierarchy process Pugh matrix Quality function deployment Decision support problem 1.1. Description of the methods: (6 points) Choose two decision-making methods and provide a brief description of each method ( 1 page total), and compare the two. The resources linked for each method are starting points. Do not simply list information from the articles linked. Provide in-text citations for the sources used in your reading. 1.2. Analysis of the methods: (4 points) Describe how each method may be used. Are there scenarios where one method would be better than the other? What are the pros and cons of each method? Are there decision scenarios in your work or personal life where you could see either of these methods being used? 2. Vehicle Purchase Decision In this problem, you are asked to apply a decision-making method to a vehicle purchase decision. The scenario is as follows. Imagine that you are a customer interested in purchasing a new passenger car. You are looking for a compact affordable vehicle with a compact size, good styling and appearance, good fuel economy, reliability, driver comfort and ergonomics, simple infotainment system, good safety features, good vehicle handling, responsive engine, low noise and vibrations, optional features (e.g., heated seats, Wi-Fi, keyless entry, etc.) and good security features. You are willing to spend around $ 35,000 ( ± $ 5,000) on the car. Choose a decision-making method researched in Part 1. Clearly state which method you have chosen. 2.1. Alternatives: (4 points) Find three vehicles currently available in the compact car segment that broad fit the criteria listed above. Gather information about the three vehicles, including important dimensions (e.g., exterior and interior, legroom, headroom, luggage space, etc.), capacities (e.g., engine size, horsepower, torque, etc.), characteristics of major subsystems (cylinder configuration, fuel injection, valve train, curb weight, suspension type, brake type and size, etc.), capabilities (e.g., 0-60 mph acceleration time, 60-0 mph braking time, miler per gallon, CO 2 emissions, turning radius, etc.), Page 1 of 2
features (e.g., navigation system, lane departure, smart headlamps, etc.), and price of the three vehicles with different optional features. Include a table in your submission with a comparison of the three vehicles. 2.2. Decision: (3 points) Use the decision-making method to choose the best vehicle alternative. Clearly document any choices made along the process (such as selection of weights). Include sufficient details in the submission so that one can replicate the results. 2.3. Evaluation (3 points) Having applied the decision-making method, critically evaluate the method. Specifically, (a) How does the method quantify the preferences of the decision maker. Does the method place any restrictions on the decision makers’ preferences? (b) How was the available information about the alternatives is utilized. Was there any information that was available, but not used in the decision? Was there any information that was needed, but not available? (c) Discuss any pros and cons of the method that you found as you applied it to the vehicle decision. Page 2 of 2
