2. When researching “data mining” you may come across the terms “data dredging” or “data snooping.” What do they mean? What implications should a researcher know about these terms? How might they be avoided?
Data dredging (also known as snooping or p-hacking) refers to intentionally exploring different data sets and conducting multiple statistical tests until a substantial finding or required outcome
2
gets obtained without appropriate correction from many comparisons. It gets used in misinterpreting research results and manipulating research findings leading to wrong clans or falsified outcomes. Researchers should know that data dredging has serious implications such as forged results, distorted scientific knowledge, and resource wastage during pursuing fraudulent leads. To avoid data dredging, researchers can create a research hypothesis, deploy statistical methods, confirm findings, report methods, and focus on importance. 3. On the following website: http://www.who.int/healthinfo/global_burden_disease/estimates_country/en/index.html
