The Four Step Process: 1. What research question is this study trying to answer? What are the explanatory and response variables in this study? 2. How was data collected in this study? a. How were participants selected for the study? b. How many participants were selected? c. How were the participants in this study divided up? d. What variables were recorded in this study? 3. How was the data analyzed? (Data Matrix above; see questions below) 4. What conclusions or predictions can we make from this study? ( see below) Migraine and acupuncture. A migraine is a particularly painful type of headache, which patients sometimes wish to treat with acupuncture. To determine whether acupuncture relieves migraine pain, researchers conducted a randomized controlled study where 89 females diagnosed with migraine headaches were randomly assigned to one of two groups: treatment or control. 43 patients in the treatment group received acupuncture that is specifically designed to treat migraines. 46 patients in the control group received placebo acupuncture (needle insertion at non-acupoint locations). 24 hours after patients received acupuncture, they were asked if they were pain free. Results are summarized in the contingency table below. 2 Group Pain free Figure from the original paper displaying the appropriate area (M) versus the inappropriate area (S) used in the treatment of migraine at tacks. Response s to the Case Study #3, #4. 3 a) What percent of the patients in the treatment group self-reported significant improvement in symptoms? What percent in the control group? (Show work!) Treatment group: Control group: 3 b) Based on your findings in part (a), which treatment appears to be more effective for treating migraines ? Explain/Discuss Why? 4a ) Do the data provide convincing evidence that there is a difference in the improvement rates of migraine symptoms? Or do you think that the observed difference might just be due to chance? Explain/ D iscuss your position! 4b) Your findings so far might suggest that acupuncture is an effective treatment for migraines for all people who suffer from migraines. However, this is not the only possible conclusion that can be drawn based on your findings so far. What is one other possible explanation for the observed difference between the percentages of patients that are pain free 24 hours after receiving acupuncture in the two groups? Explain/Discuss.
